I hear that Aylmer Island is a nice spot to stop before hitting the
city. Do I need permission from anyone to camp for a night on Alymer
Island?

I don't think so. Watch out there's TONS of poison ivy. Everywhere. The
beach has a fair amount of broken glass. Don't expect to have it for
yourself as it is a favourite spot for teen-agers.

If you are interested in overnight trips in a daysailer (sailboat without
cabin accomodation) you might want to look at the Dingy Cruising
Association website which address I can't remember but would come up in a
web search at, eg www.google.com. This association is in the UK where
dingy cruising is popular. You sleep on the boat under a tarp.

Beware here in Canada it can be a nightmare of mosquitoes. I made a tent
for a small boat I built and have slept on it twice. The first time I lay
away all night killing mosquites who could not find their way out of my
tent. The second time I took DEET and a mosquitoe smudge (those green
mosquitoe coils) and slept fine and in the morning everything in the boat
was under a blanket of dead mosquitoes. It was fun and an interesting
experience and I hope to do it again. The first time was on the Clyde
River in Lanark Co. The second time was on White Lake near Arnprior.
(There is a photo of this boat at www.duckworksmagasine.com in an article
called "Bear Paw Sail", at the bottom of the article. The photo was taken
at Meach Lake in Gatineau Park.)

good luck

No permission required. The island is public land on the Ontario side
of the river. But you'll have to abide by local laws, rules and
regulations for outdoor activities, as the Ontario Provincial Police
has been known to pay surprise visits to the site. Furthermore,
because of poison ivy, West-Nile mosquitos and laud-teen-agers you'll
be camping there at your own risk. And whatever you do, don't dig! The
island is a fragile ecosystem and the historic burial ground of a
native nation. Here is an account of what happenned to a bunch of lads
that started to dig in the Island some 60 years ago.

There were three tents on the island last night - though - I do agree it is
full of poison ivy.

regarding camping, I wonder if there are any problems with basic security
over night? If I leave my Cat beached whil I sleep in my tent, will some
teenage yahoo cruise by and decide to float it loose?

Anyone out there heard any stories? Or is it as safe as a normal provincial
park?

Cheers & thanks,
Pete

PS- I hit the Alymer beach as well as Island (watching for the broken glass
and poisen ivy... both of which were easy to find) today for a family picnic
and sail, and it was a great hit with the kids.... my 6-year old even helmed
the boat back to the launch at the end or range road. Quite the fun day I
must say.

not a problem. tie one end of a line around the boat and the other end
around your waist. sleep worry free.

Last time I camped there it was full of poison ivy so instead of picking low we picked high into the trees and we still got the itch. Reminder to one's self don't forget the toilet paper.
