*.ncf.ca seems to be down at the moment.

I lost my DSL a few minutes after that (approx. 8:15 pm Thurs.).

It is now 1:45 am Fri. and still no DSL and *.ncf.ca still
disconnected from the Internet.

I phoned TS around 11 pm. AFAIK, no reponse from anyone at
the NCF.

WTF?

Yes.

I was on at about 7:45pm on Thursday, doing the newsgroups,
and suddenly the server wasn't responding. It never came
back, and wasn't there this morning at 10am when i went out.
It's now 2pm, and is working.

The email server wasn't there either, and of course, the ncf.ca
startpage wasn't there either.

Of course, I use another ISP to access the NCF, so maybe all
was working within the system.

It did seem a rather long and comprehensive failure.

On the other hand, there was a message up the other day about
some downtown for routine maintenance this week, though I
thought it was for earlier in the week.

I'm assuming it's back up now for good.

It's also worth adding two things.

First, it was good that you posted. When the NCF goes offline,
it often does go offline quite dramatically, and being able to
see that someone else has the problem is good. I know I scrambled
around thinking of some place there might be some word about the
problem, and if you'd not posted, I'd still be wondering. I saw
your post last night, but couldn't be bothered looking for the
password to use google to post a reply.

The second thing is, for others reading and for posterity, the
problem was apparently a network problem at Carleton, which of
course is the location of the NCF hardware. And judging from
the posts to the webforums, NCF was working fine, it was just
nobody could get out or in.

At one time this used to be a fairly active newsgroup. I posted
my first message (the one you quoted) from my machine to
news.individual.net, which carries ott.online, shortly after the
NCF outage started but while my NCF DSL was still working. Not
long after that my DSL went down and since the NCF servers were
cut off from the Internet, I was unable to authenticate, so was
without DSL until the NCF came back online at around 10:30am Fri.,
14 hours later.

The only way to get onto the NCF side was using dialup. Without
DSL, I was able to get onto the Internet side using Mitel dialup.
From the Internet *.ncf.ca was not accessible, but I was able to
connect to www.carleton.ca .

I didn't have nntp set up on the laptop I used for dialup,so I
posted my second message to news.individual.net, from a unix
shell account (I haven't done that for years).

I didn't really expect to get a response, but figured I might
as well try it.

Howard E.
