Honda shadow Ace 750 or Suzuki vz800 Marauder or HD sportster 883

Does anyone have any comment on either of these street cruisers? I
would definitely be buying a 2000/2001 model!

I looked at all these bikes last year. The sportster is the most
powerful of the lot and offers the highest quality cosmetics.(it is also
the most expensive) I didn't even consider the marauder(way too much
plastic for my taste). However, I thought the suzuki intruder 1400 was
pretty cool and almost bought one. The Kwak vulcans are also a really
nice cruising bike.

In the end I opted for the sportster. Here's a brief list of sportster
pros and cons in no particular order:
PROS
1) most powerful in its class
2) easily upgradeable to 1200cc(HD stealership will bore out your
cylinders and install wiseco pistons balanced for the smaller 883
flywheel--$1000.00CDN)
3) belt drive
4) standard, sport and hugger models include mag wheels
5) higher resale value
6) parts and accessories are plentiful(you don't have to buy everything
from HD)
7) fun to drive (guess that applies to just about all of them)
8) working on your bike will not void your warranty
9) relatively low maintenance

CONS
1) Harley tax(to get the most out of the sportster you'll need to rejet
the carb, change your air filter and install new mufflers--you don't
need the obnoxiouly loud ones)
2) Hate the seat! Changed it almost immediately.
3) Rear suspension can be a little strange and takes some getting used
to.
4) Killer insurance premiums!
5) You'll take a lot of crap from stuck up big twin baggers..... : )

I bought mine new in June of 99'. I've put 20k on it so far and am very
pleased with it. I wish you good luck and safe riding with whatever bike
you may decide to purchase.

George,

My findings and experience renting a 1200 sportster in Az, concur with
yours...but even
though it's a fine bike, I still wouldn't buy one.....I don't like that
teeth chattering vibration!
I had my rental opened up on the 'carefree highway "from Kingman Az back to
Phoenix and
between 90-100mph, my brain was rattling along with my fillings. The 1200
is a nice bike up
to 120kph...after that it's a 1200cc vibrator par
excellance....ladies...you haven't experienced what
real vibrations feel like until you ride a 1200!

Dan (doesn not like vibrations on his head) K.

yes

another $1000 -> stealership..when that could have bought some neat
accessories for your rice burner.

very good!

poseur effects only..no functional value

well not as much as the big twin, but people still think it's a Harley, so
they believe it may actually
esculate to some arbitrary value..only because there are other's who
believe the same crap.

True, cuz you will need to buy a few parts after you bring it home!

all bikes are fun to drive..I like my Viagra..it's fun to drive as well.

My 97 Virago has never seen the stealership that kept it enchained, since I
signed the pact and
brought it home.

My Virago just needs oil changes and a couple of pecks on the gas tank. It
has never let me down!

$300-$600 more to the stealership

>

$500 or more for a <Corbin, Mustang..whatever>

Yes, I noticed that..it's either "klunk" or "thump"

Because there is a H-D stolen every minute in North America. People for
some reason,
think that those old technology relics are worth something...must be the
poseur value!

Well Joe B. isn't stuck up...he gives everyone equal time...with his "one

Yes they do vibrate but I've gotten used to it.

Maybe so but a 750/800cc class cruiser gets boring real quick, especially if
you're riding two up. Instead of selling your small cruiser and taking a
30%-40% depreciation loss(including that $1000 worth of rice burning
accessories), why not spend the $1000 and upgrade to a 1200cc cruiser. This is
definately a worthwhile option.

Wrong! If you want to pose, I suggest you shell out the extra cash for the
laced wheels. Have you never had the experience of truing a laced(spoked)
wheel? A big pain in the ass. The cast mags are pretty much maintenance free
and come with the bike. I'd say they have quite a bit of functional value.

Agree with you on that one.

Also true. Like I said, lose the seat, jet the carbs, change air filter and
mufflers. I seem to remember a post on this ng about you doing similar things
to your viagra Dan....

Cost under $300 to buy all parts from the stealership. Could have gone to cycle
shack pipes and saved more but was too lazy. Installed the stuff myself(very
simple process).

Nope. Can't stand Corbins. Bought an HD deluxe touring seat. Under $400.00CDN.
Very comfortable on long rides.

Yup, same sound my old XV1000 made except the harley is a little smoother.

Why isn't there a Yamaha stolen every moment?

If you're still not convinced, all I can do is invoke the sacred Harley clause:

"If you have to ask, you don't understand." (the author of that little sentence
was a genius) : )

"Happiness is a 500 pound vibrator"(borrowed from a creative individual on rmh)

That's right up there with "If you wouldn't take my help when you
didn't need it, why should I give it to you now when you do need it?"
Either could be the moto of this NG :)

Could be the moto of half the seedier NGs out there :^)

The above price is wrong. I went through my bills after posting this and discovered
it was more like $400.00. : (

Who said anything about service? Is this a fragile ego moment for Dan? Is this thread
supposed to highlight that you can work on your own bike?(there I said it. Does
Danny-wanny feel better now?) Big deal. So can I. Are you going to tell me Yamahas don't
require service? I know from experience they do. Are you trying to say Yamaha parts are
cheaper than Harley parts? Another big laugh.

Like I said before, I seem to remember a certain viagra user on this ng changed his viagra
pipes, air filter and carb jets. Anybody remember who that was? The signature at the
bottom of the post looked like this:
Dan (Dan likes loud pipes...)K.

Couldn't have been Dan Kuryliak. He buys bikes that only require oil changes and an
occasional licking of the gas tank. No need to change anything, the factory always gets it
right the first time. : )

I refuse to be held ransom to the stealers! This is why I prefer to ride a Yammie. They
also
rip me off on the price of parts, but at least the friggin' gov't isn't going to grab 15% of
my
hardearned -half-a-paycheck-now and the stealers will have to tap someone else for ripping
off on the service. The other bonus is that the bike is ready when *I* says it's ready and
not
sitting in some stealer's compound until they get a "round tuit".

No I never said that Yammie parts are cheaper than Harleys...Yamaha has taken a page from
Harley and found out that you can charge 3 or 4 times the price of what the part should cost.

Who started the Japs on the big bankroll?....why all yuz old Harley diehards..that would sell

their grandmother for some !@#$%^& expensive chrome to take on the old vib-rat-or!

Yes, that was me in a previous life (after divource death) but now this is the *new improved*

me! I hate loud pipes and old Harleys..but not some female Harley riders...Ladies..my phone
number is: <bzzt...whisper..whisper>...

Yup, I like to kiss the gas tank of my Viagra for luck. While it doesn't have those super
stoppie
power 6 piston-graphite -carbon pads- on- a- floating disk brakes, it has decent pickup,
and doesn't need a drip pan under it....<hee-hee> like most Harleys. It doesn't have
pushrods,
and it doesn't need an oil cooler, or cam bearings or Andrews cam/stage1/stageII
etc..conversion
kits...and the stock seat fits me just fine......

Can you hear that giant sucking sound....<of your hardearned after tax dollars> going down
the
stealerships drain?"

Hi Sharon
I had a Shadow ACE Tourer 1100 - and it was an extremely nice ride;
smooth and quiet. The Shadow engine is almost indestructible and
relatively maintenance free. The 750 ACE is one of the finer looking
machines I've seen in a while. Huge headlight too...!

I rode a HD 883 only once in my life and that was enough... worst ride
I ever had.

Never tried a Marauder and haven't known anyone who has...

That's my nickel!
