Replace the Head gasket? or all of them?

So I got the bike out of storage and running great... I let it warm up for
10 mins and then revved the throttle a bit and the engine responded well...
except that it appears oil is leaking out the head gasket and and making
some nice smoke! Not pouring out, but enough to be a problem.

I've found an eBay supplier who will sell a complete gasket kit, top and
bottom, for $47 USD. Seems like a good deal to me.

Has anyone had success with not OEM gasket kits?

Should I replace all the gaskets just down to the head, or while I'm at it
should I replace the bottom ones too? The bottom seems to be seeping (not
leaking) a touch of oil, which seems to be normal. Never seen any drips.

Thanks!

Cam cover gasket, head gasket, base gasket? If it's the head gasket,
compression should be low and it would not run properly.

Compression was pretty good before I winterized it (170 psi if i can
remember) and I believe it ran good. In all the other times I've run the
bike it hasn't leaked. Maybe the compression is lower now. I don't ride
yet (waiting for the course... arghhh) but it idles fine.

What kind of bike is it?
I had an older XJ750 and it had a bit of a leak when I first got it.
After buying a gasket set and riding for about a month, the leak
stopped. Sold the bike with the gasket kit and its still running with
the old gaskets. If you want an OEM gasket set, Cycle Salvage can
order in a set if available for your bike. Took 3 days to get mine
from them last spring.

It's a 1980 Honda CM400E with 18,000 kms

It's weird.. never leaked before... then all of a sudden when I was revving
it in neutral (not that hard either)

It's worth retorqueing the head bolts first to see if that fixes things. If
it doesn't you need to change the cylinder base gasket too since it will
probably break when you pull the head. You'll need to change the exhaust
flange gaskets too, cam chain tensioner gasket, and the valve cover gasket.
Is it an air cooled bike? That would mean less gaskets to deal with I
imagine. If you've got a valve spring compressor do the valve guide seals
too.

I should also mention that while adjusting the cam chain tensioner, the
adjusting bolt broke.. argh! So I have to take the top end apart anyways to
get down their. I might as well replace the gaskets. I'm just wondering if
it's worth it to do the bottom end.

Old Hondas. I miss ridding the old CX already, but I don't miss the bike
that would break an ugly stick, and I really don't miss bolts snapping off.
On the other hand new bike payments are a bitch.

If you're going into the motor to find broken bits, change all the gaskets
you come to before finding them as long as you're sure you got every piece.
To change the top end gaskets, you can leave the motor in the frame
(usually... I think this applies to the CM series of bikes too). The bottom
end requires that you split the case and lift it out of the frame.
If you're an experienced wrench (not wench) swinger, redo the whole motor.
Make sure you have the right torque wrench (low range - Princess Auto has
them cheapest) and manual before you start. :)

Anyone have success with the Princess Auto torque wrenches? That's exactly
what I was looking at getting... Are they ok? Accurate?

I have rebuilt 3 automobile engines with the same $29.95 (on sale) PAW
torque wrench and (knock on wood) all are still running fine.
