Good Day All,

I have a motorcycle in storage which I will be trying to sell in the next
few weeks. In order to bring it home I will need to ride it approx. 50 kms.
from its current location. I have no insurance coverage nor any valid
plates on it. I know I can get a temporary license permit from the MTO but
can I get some type of temporary insurance from my current insurance carrier
to cover me while I ride it home and for the time period I'm in the process
of selling the bike? Just seeking some advise/ comments before I contact my
insurance broker about this matter.

Thanks for your input.

Robert

It would probably be easier, faster and cheaper to rent a van or a

You can only get the Temp Plates once in your ownership so if you had temp
plales when you brought it home you cannot get them again.

Like the first response I would suggest a trailer.

What type of bike is it?

If your insurance company won't give you Temporary coverage, do this:

"sell" the bike to a friend for whatever amount, and they will
automatically get 15 days insurance coverage.

They can then drive the bike back for you with legal insurance
coverage.

Once it is deliver safely to your home in Ottawa, you can cancel the
deal.

voila ! Bike delivered legally!

where does this temporary insurance coverage come from? The original owner?
or the ''friend it's being 'sold' to"?

When you purchase a vehicle, your insurance carrier will usually cover the
vehicle under your current policy until you get everything in order (within
a few days). What the other guy is suggesting is called fraud. You would
sign your vehicle over to your friend, and his insurance company would cover
the bike. He'd have to get plates on it to ride it (temp would work). Now,
the problem with this "master" plan is that your friend would have to pay
PST on the vehicle when he put the temp permit on it and registered it in
his name. PST isn't much on an old piece of crap, but if your bike is newer,
you pay the black book value regardless of what you write on the reciept
(unless it's a salvage title). Keep in mind, no insurance company is going
to pay out a claim on an unregistered vehicle. A police officer would also
treat an unregistered vehicle as an uninsured vehicle.

It's not legal. You'd be better off just phoning your carrier and asking
them to cover the bike for a single trip. If that doesn't work, rent a
UHaul cube truck for $19.99, eat the 100kms mileage charge, and be done with
it.
