Since the warranty period for a bike is all but one year, is this expensive
service schedule absolutely necessary if one changes their own oil filter
etc. or am I missing the finer point here?

My warranty was three years for the street bike, 90 days for the dirt
bikes ;-)

Have you ever owned a new car? Ever sent it to the dealer for regular
maintenance during the warranty period? Same thing.

Sure there's lots you can do but check the owners manual to find out
what gets done at each service interval (oil change or valve
adjustment?) and then decide how important the warranty is to you.
Fortunately the motorcycle dealers around here seem to be a LOT better
than the car dealers when it comes to replacing things under warranty.

What bike is it?

James.

Thanks for your input, it's a Honda 02 VFR. I'll take your advice and have
it serviced though there is at this point nothing wrong with it. I hate the
thought of paying $$$ for a guy to walk around the bike and proclaim it's ok
ship it out and do basically very little.
