I'm just about ready to buy either the Honda ST1300 or the new BMW K1200GT.
I certainly can save a little coin with the Honda. (At almost $6K cheaper).
I would like to hear some feed back on these bikes. I personally think the
ST1300 is a real improvement over the dated ST1100 and the new K1200GT
finally fits nicely between the K1200RS and the "Gold Wingish" K1200LT. I
am just a little uncertain as to the direct comparison in terms of
performance , handling and comfort between the two bikes. Love to hear from
you with your comments.

  • more power on the road for the ST;

  • more Honda dealers in North America (I presume you are buying one of those bikes to travel around a bit I hope);
  • BMW engine is smooth as electric;
  • BMW comes with the best ABS system.

My own two cents

I'm pretty sure it's a 3 year warranty for the Honda as well

The BMW also comes with the Servo-assited braking system, which after
what I've heard, I would not want.
From what I've heard, BMW has some quality control issues on their
bikes... However, that being said, BMW does have a good reputation for
long-term reliability, so maybe once the problems get fixed the first
time, they don't come back.

I've had an ST1100 for a couple of years and 50,000 kms now, and for
me, it would be a no-brainer. I would buy the ST1300, no question
about it. They've made a lot of improvements over the 1100. For
long-term reliability, the ST1100 has proven itself over many, many
miles. I suspect the ST13 will have a similar record. And the $6000
you would save, could buy a lot of add-on goodies.

Actually the Honda is far smoother than the BMW, also the Honda ABS is
superior.

Most of their bikes do, but I know for sure that the Gold Wing and ST1300
have 3 year, unlimited mileage warranty in the US, and that my '99 ST had a
3 year unlimited mileage warranty in Canada. I can't see them having
reduced the length of the warranty.

Honda has a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty on the Gold Wing, ST1300 and
the Valk.

Yamaha has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty on the Royal Star Venture,
Ithink that is what the model was called.

Interesting that Honda would have different warranties for different
bikes in their line up or is it that the higher priced bikes come with
the extended warranty built into the price.

Any way's when I was in the market for a touring bike last August I
looked at BMW R1150 RS, Yamaha FJ1300, BMW K1200 RS, Honda ST1100.... I
finally bought a 2002 Honda VFR added Givi bags, heated grips, Heli Bars
and a Givi windscreen and still walked away with probably the best sport
tourer on the market and several thousand dollars less than the others.
Oh yea I forgot it's RED very RED..........

I think you should compare the ST with the BMW R1150RT, after all the ST was designed to compete with the RT.

I am sure the ST is a great bike - but the RT is, well, an RT.

The RT's is not as smooth, for sure, but it's got:
- lots of character
- hold its value very well
- an incredible riding machine
- has tons of accessories for it.

It has nothing to with price, but with how they know they will be driven.

Fred,

I was thinking about buying the ST1300 with ABS brakes myself. Do you
have any "rule of thumb" regarding how much below MSRP one should pay for
a bike like this?

Thanks.
