I recently purchased a 1982 XJ750 Seca. The Haynes maintenance manual
speaks of two drain plugs - one for the sump and one for the gearbox
(although the filler is common). Apparently to do a complete (3.5L)
oil change one needs to remove both plugs as removing just the sump
plug only allows 2.7L to drain. At one point in the manual failing to
drain the gear box is cited as a cause of failures/excessive wear.
As far as I can tell the gear box plug is totally concealed by the
exhaust crossover. Seems to me that having to drop the exhaust is a
bit excessive to do an oil change. Can anyone tell me what the original
owner's manual said about all this and or shed any light?

I took a quick look in my manual for my 1984XJ 750 which is pretty close to
the same type of bike.
My manual mentions the following specs at the back of the manual:
periodic oil change of 3.6L
with oil filter replacement 2.5L
Total amount 2.8L
Don't know what that means so I took a look at the step by step for the oil
change, and the last thing you do is add the oil.
periodic oil change 2.5L
with oil filter replacement 2.8L
??????
I'm kinda at a loss of exacly what this is to mean and this is straight from
the manual that came with the bike.
all it really mentions is to run the bike till hot, turn it off.
put your pan under, remove the drain plug, drain the oil, remove the oil
filter bolt and filter element, reinstall the drain plug,
Drain plug torque, 31ft.lb
install new filter element, new O-ring, and the filter cover, tighten the oil
filter bolt., and add oil through the filler hole.
