Hi.
My winter project is renovating an old '82 Virago that has been left outside
for quite a while.

Can anyone recommend a place in or around Ottawa that can do chrome plating?
I'm not after exhibition quality, but just a reasonable job that won't fall
off in one season!

Thanks for any pointers

The Harley dealer and aftermarket shops will steer you in the right
direction on that one. But be prepared to shell out a fair bit of coin... if
you want to re-plate existing chrome parts the old chrome has to be
chemically stripped first before new plating can be applied. If you want
good chrome you'll need to get the triple plating process; if you get the
cheaper flash chrome treatment it will be peeling in a year's time. Flash
chrome doesn't handle heat as good as the triple stuff, either. In some
cases it's cheaper to buy a chromed part from the aftermarket than it is to
get the original one plated.

But have you considered getting the engine cases and other aluminum alloy
parts polished instead? Way cheaper in the long run, although it does
require more effort to keep it shiny than chrome. In my opinion, nothing
looks better than a "F*ck You" black bike with polished aluminum. :)

Ken,

Try RLD Industries, they do plating. It is a technique called cerachroming.
Last winter they did my Yoshimura 4 in 1 and I was pleased with both the
price and the service.

Check them out and decide for yourself.

Thanks Mike,
Yes, I expect I'll pay a bit. I even thought I might just get some parts
stripped and then painted.

I do like the idea of polishing the aluminum. I guess the harley dealer is
also a god place to ask about that too.

Thanks for the pointer Nicole.

Do you mean "cermichrome" or is cerachrome different. I know a process that
does the inside of cylinders and that is cemichrome, a mix of ceramic anc
chrome. Didn't know you could get it for exterior parts. Does it look like
regular chrome?

Oh, I TOTALLY agree with this sentiment :)

My bike has minimal chrome, more aluminum. Pray tell...how does one polish
the stuff shiny?

Really interested to know.

Gary's Custom Cycle.
Advertisement is on page 687 of the yellow pages.
His work is fantastic and depending on the complexity of the piece being
done the prices are reasonable. His chrome is triple plated "show chrome".
If you want to see examples of his work I will show you what he did on my
bike. His work is guaranteed and serial numbered.

To get to his place go up Lees Ave/St (by the University of Ottawa), bypass
the turn off to the 417 and take Robinson Ave.

I've heard Gary's Custom Cycle on Robinson Avenue is good. I haven't
had any work done there but over the winter I plan to go with some
parts for a scooter restoration project. Also, I'm told he does good
glassbead and other "blasting" work. NO idea about pricing.

Now that's what I call a satisfied customer . Your right Gary's chroming is
excellent . He's also a very nice guy to deal with , I go there all the time
for custom parts for my bikes .

I had some work done by Gary's Custom Cycle once. Gary's doesn't
actually do the plating (and neither do any MC shops that I know of),
but I believe they sent it out to G. G. Buffing & Plating in Montreal.

If you want to cut the middle man out, you might go there directly.
You might either pick up or drop off your parts in conjunction with
the Montreal motorcycle show at the end of February and save yourself
an extra trip.

Wow... Dwarf8 has answered that question with a couple of excellent links -
much better than anything I could have offered! Brings back memories of when
I had my Sportster; one winter many years ago I polished all the aluminum
parts myself and painted the cases wrinkle black, then had the body parts
and frame painted Imron Black (or what I called "F*ck You " Black). Damn,
but it looked absolutely awesome.

Wow, this newsgroup is amazing. Thanks to all for the great tips and links.
Polishing certainly looks like a great way to add some sparkle to the bike.

Before I get there though I have to disassemble it piece by piece outside
and drag each one down to my basement for the winter. The engine is just
about out...Things certainly come apart easily and I hope they go back
together just the same way! lots of work to do just to get the engine
rebuilt!

By the time I've finished I guess I will have spent more on the bike than it
would have cost me to buy one in good shape....but I suppose I wouldn't have
had as much fun over the winter!

Thanks again to all.

Gary's Custom Cycle here in town does all my chroming for the old Norton.
Like others have mentioned, the triple plating process isn't cheap but the
end result is worth it. Gary's used to do aluminum polishing as well. He's
in the Yellow Pages..

It is different from cermichrome. It can be used for interiors & exteriors.
Also you can get it in a "chrome-like" finish or other colours. I am partial
to black.

Speaking of chrome.....

I bought a beenie (novelty) helmet for my bro. It is currently
flat black in color. He would like it to be shiny chrome color.
Does anyone know of a place, or how this can be accomplished?
I don't want to spray paint it silver...I want shiny,
reflective chrome. :)

I think my brother is the only one on an R6 that rides in
a beenie helmet :) hehehe Looks absolutely halarious :)))
(ofcourse only when he is slowly
putting around town....not highway rides...)

Cheers,

-ao

I believe that you can buy chrome paint at Canadian Tire etc.

Of course slowly putting around town is where he is most likely to get
t-boned by some inattentive driver in a car or truck

Oh and don't forget the white DOT sticker that you can buy
in the novelty stores to fool the cops . After all we only
wear those @#&#$%$# helmets because we have to . Darwin awards coming
up are they ?
