I used to be a tenant of one of his apartment buildings. I moved in at
the end of Nov. and found out that there's only one layer of window and a
big gap in the living room. You can imagine the tempreture and my new
baby is coming in Dec, so I asked him to fix it. His response was 'NO'
because it's always like that. The simple thing I did and the lazy thing
was I told him I won't pay rent until it's fixed. And then he warned me
he could sue me which reminded me what I should do, so I told him back and
said that sounds like what I need to do. Then he sent somebody the
second day to fix the window.
I never get any interest toward the last month deposit.
After I lived there for about over half year, I received a letter from the
government saying that the property tax in that area has been decreased so
I would expect to receive some refund from my landlord very soon. So I
wait and wait for couple of months until I lost my patience and called
him. His response sounded to me not like it's something under processing
but something he didn't know at all for the first place, which was very
suspecious, but he agreed to refund the portion I was entitled. But I
have the impression that if I didn't call, then that amount of money will
be buried underground for ever.
I have the feeling that 'the dealmaker' is him as well. And I know he has
a brother doing similar stuff.
That's the type of people to avoid....the ones that can lie straight
to your face, and when you prove them wrong, they get all
offensive and upset.
What you should do is go to a lawyer, get a certificate of pending
litigation. This meant the property involved cannot be sold
until the case is over. You can do it yourself (as you can
represent yourself in court) I believe it's on the 4th floor
in the Ottawa courthouse. ... If the trial will be in 6 months,
that property will be on hold for 6 months....messing up the buyer
and seller, so most probably the seller will back out...
The whole process is timeconsuming, but not necesarily expensive
if you represent yourself.
