hello. i am in no was attached to maaco paint and body company. i just had
a job done there. i wanted to tell anyone in the market for a paint job
that this company is extremely good. they had my car for 5 days (hoooo boy
did a lot need to be done) and they did it for $1200 _less_ than the next
best offer. this made me nervous, i figured the job would not be as good,
but i'm not really rich so i went ahead. the job turned out beautifully.
they also gave me a coupon for rust proofing at 25% off (which is actually
good for them too 'cause they do it). just an honest recommendation to take
your car to these people, they really try hard to please.

Where is a good place to get a inexpensive paint job? I'm not looking for a
amazing finish, and I'll do the body work myself, i just want someone to put
the actual color coat & clear coat on.. (I'm debating buying a automotive
spray gun to hook up to my compressor, but I'm no picasso (actually, my car
would probably end up looking like a picasso if i did it myself).)

Lessons learned from not taking my car to a professional and instead doing
it myself:

1. DO listen to people when they say DO NOT do the body work, paint removal
and primer yourself.
2. Understand that to REMOVE the paint doesn't mean to strip it down to bare
metal.
3. DO NOT use paint remover on a car. Any car. Anytime. For any reason.
Don't.
4. There's a reason, that if you stupidly insist on using paint remover on a
car, why you should follow the instructions and do only 4 inches at a time.
5. Pouring one gallon of paint remover on the backend of a car, thinking
"this will be that much faster" will end with tragedy.
6. Paint remover really does burn skin. Burns just the same on hands as it
does on face and arms. Horribly.
7. Do not leave one dumped gallon of paint remover on the backend of a car
unattended to go wash off paint remover from non-gloved (of course the paint
remover said wear gloves), burning hands, arms and face.
8. Be prepared. For the horrible mess once you stagger back outside with
burned appendages to use the water hose to get rid of the mess -- yeah, I
said water hose. (BTW, don't try to water the mess away).
9. Understand that when paint remover has finished removing the paint while
you left it unattended that it dries. It dries into lumps and chunks and
motley colors you never saw on your, or any other car before. It rolls off
the car but mostly halfway down the sides, onto the tires, the license, the
cat . . . it basically ends up looking like something terribly diseased
URPED all over the backend of your car . . . .
10. And finally, understand that just ignoring everything -- the mess, the
sneers from other drivers, people in parking lots -- even though you swear
never again to play with paint remover on a sunny Saturday, makes it worse.
Because of course, metal left on it's own rusts.

Please tell me you have a video of your little adventure!! You could make
money selling it. It sure seems like it would be some kinda fun to watch!!

P.S. I apologize if I sounded cruel, It was absolutely NOT intended. Just
trying to make light of a "gone bad" situation.

P.P.S. The cat part is what made it for me!! ;\)

Good to hear that you are happy with Maaco's service.

Unfortunately, you can't completely judge a paint job or bodywork
just after completion of the job. It takes at least a year to
see if the rust doesn't come through again. At $1200, did they
weld in new metal or more likely, they used fiberglass, which
typically has a life expectancy of 1 - 2 years.

Only time will tell if you really got your money's worth. So
just a word of caution spoken with a bit of experience.

All the best, and keep the old cars going!

Well I went there and they botched up my paint job pretty
good, had runs, the paint was "cloudy" they used cheap
masking tape and damaged the paint when it was removed.
Had to take the crae there 4 times to get it somewhat
corrected, and then I gave up and traded the car in...
