Nelson, we have at times needed to compare teams that did not even play each other at all, so we would default to the 4th tiebreaker which is fewest average goals per game allowed in the division.
I see your point, in a group of 6 , the old days, there was
always a home and away game. But now we could be comparing two
teams who have only played each other once.
So first compare is head to head points, if one team won , ok
they go forward.
If they tied 0-0 then we drop to away goals, same, so drop
to 4th compare which is average goals allowed in the season.
If they tied 1-1 , well, the away goal for someone will put
them as the winners.So be it.
As our current Boston Celtics and Bruins have just shown us,
there is no home field advantage.
BTW head to head goal difference is tie break #2. So it comes
into play but not if there is only one game between them.
