While I was working at the bookstore, I kept a list of books that
never seemed to get enough attention, but people would always come
back to tell me they enjoyed. It would be fun to have a bi-weekly or
monthly book group based on them.

Another idea is everyone bringing their very favorite book--you always
know someone will have a lot of enthusiasm and want to discuss
something there!

Thoughts?

I think monthly would be the be perfect--it would give people time to
get a book and read it. Some people are not fast readers. And I
think the "same" book would be best with perhaps people adding to a
list. I have been in book groups before and read some really great
books that I never would of chosen, I was really challenged and like
it alot. So very excited about this venture.

Definitely the same book--unless other people disagree, I feel like a
choice of no more than a couple books to read helps the discussion at
a small book group. I know there are book groups that every month
offer a long list of books, but what if no one has read the same book
as you? What do you talk about? Maybe it works with similar books,
like if each person has read a paranormal with a whoop-arse female
main character, and you can compare them...still sounds like an odd
idea to me, a book group where you don't read the same books.

We could even do a couple of book groups, which would give people more
choice--if the 'first Monday' book group is reading Altered Carbon and
you really aren't into hard sci-fi, maybe you choose the 'first
Sunday' book group instead and take a risk on Wise Child?

And welcome, welcome, welcome to the list, Miss Mabel!

This sounds like an absolutely fabulous idea!  Book club and luncheon once a month! I am not reading nearly as much as I'd like to these days, and this would be the perfect way to get more reading in and make some new friends. Maybe a names in a hat deal for the book choice? Everyone puts a book in and we can work our way through them all until we empty the hat, then go again!

That sounds like an excellent idea!  I can only do flyers in lots of like 250, but maybe I can do one with several 'activities' on it--gaming groups, events, game testers, writing group etc!  Awesome thought, thanks!

I agree that you shouldn't have numerous books around in the book club, but another idea for you're book club is to have 2 or 3 books with a similar idea/theme/genre, and have the group compare and contrast the two books. Talk about how the authors approached things like conflict, description, character development, etc. differently and how it enriched or detracted from the book, or the reasoning for why a certain technique was more effective than others, or why it could have been improved.

I'm trying to figure out what to buy for the first book club book.
I'd like to have something steampunk, but on the other hand everyone
who would come has probably read them all!

LOL--what ever I have already read I have probably already forgotten most of it so I could stand to reread it ;0)I blame all memory loss on my 3 kids.

Oh! Well, how about the first Girl Genius novel, then? That intrigue
anyone?

It doesn't have to be a book I'll stock, either. I'll be mostly used
and just buy a stack to highlight, but we could still read something
totally random like Kim Harrison.

I'll see whether I can get it! It'd be an awesome thing to have a
great whacking stack of on the counter!

I ordered a stack of the first Girl Genius novel, Agatha H. and the
Airship City. Maybe we'll get enough group people to buy them up!
