Protect Chaco - Comment on BLM Site by 4/7

Image: Peñasco Blanco, Adriel Heisey

Friends,

It is shocking to be given less than ONE week to comment on the news that the BLM is planning to lift all restrictions and protective measures around Chaco Canyon to allow and support drilling for oil and gas. Let your voice be heard in this urgent need to protect Chaco by commenting on the BLM site by Tuesday, April 7th.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chaco Canyon has legal protection under the international convention. Chaco Canyon is recognized worldwide as a center of brilliant cultural achievements in astronomy, magnificent multi-story architecture, and engineering of extensive straight roads. These features extend far across the landscape surrounding Chaco Canyon—just where fracking activity would bring major disturbance… and has already. With the support of the Puebloan Tribal governments, a “buffer zone” of ten miles around the Chaco Canyon National Historical Park was implemented to protect these fragile ancestral Puebloan sites. This critical protection was in recognition of the sacred nature of the landscape in the larger region. In rescinding that protection, the BLM is acting in flagrant disregard of a vital cultural heritage.

For the US government to drop these protections to support oil exploration and drilling is as though the Egyptian government promoted the area around the pyramids for energy development for immediate monetary gain or short-sighted energy resourcing.

We strongly urge BLM to confer as the law requires with the descendant people of Chaco, as it considers these dangerous actions, and with the researchers who can also demonstrate the crucial needs for protection of Chaco’s invaluable sites.

Click here and make your voice count - by April 7.
