Dear Friends,

Most of you will already have received the press release written by our executive director, Jacques Depelchin, currently residing in Mozambique, of a grave threat to one of our honorary board members. (I've attached it in case you haven't.)  Professor Ernest Wamba dia Wamba lives in Kinshasa and recently has been very much involved in protesting the brutality of the government toward the people of Bas-Congo (Lower Congo)--especially toward members of the Bundu dia Kongo (BDK), a "movement for the cultural and spiritual emancipation of the Congo people," as Jacques describes it in the attached press release. Professor Wamba has been active in supporting the right of the BDK and others to express themselves freely, and for this he and Honorable Deputy Kiakwama apparently are the targets of an assassination plan.

The situation is urgent, and we ask your help in publicizing and protesting these threats. Below are some people and agencies to contact, but we hope you will raise your voices wherever you think they would be most effective.

In solidarity,

Susan Lyon
Executive Board Member
