Now that Sun has purchased StarDivision, they are releasing StarOffice
for free download, and no commercial or institutional restrictions.
(Previously it was free for personal non-institutional use and cost
money beyond that.) They are also selling the CD for about $10. They
also intend to release the source code.
StarOffice can read and write MS Office files, and includes modules
for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, vector and raster
graphics, calendaring, email, database access, USENET news reading,
and a math module "for devising complex formulas".
The main downside I see is that StarOffice requires a pretty current
machine to be usable; without enough memory or processor speed it's
too slow.
