Hi,

I am Sonia and I am interested in your tool Ostinato (client-drone) for my railway project, but to verify if it is suitable for my needs, I would like to have a demo o trial version.

Thanks in advance

Hi Srivats,

Thanks for your soon answer! I have installed de Ostinato 0.7.1 and I need the architecture client-server to send traffic and analyze.

I have followed the settings defined in your web (https://userguide.ostinato.org/Settings.html) but I can’t make it work.

Can you help me?

1.       PC1 has to be set Ostinato as Client.

2.       PC2 has to be set Ostinato as Server > How Can I do?

3.       I have to send UDP traffic between Client-Server

Thanks in advance.

Hi
You don't have to use Ostinato on both PC.
Caveat is that Ostinato does not process incoming traffic by design (it's generator).
So you can craft any UDP stream you want, but it's processing on remote receiver is up to you.
Just run wireshark on that target and see whether stream is coming or not (of you will see a lot of ICMP port unreachables).
Clarify your case, what do you pursue.

Hi again,

I thought that it was able to show the “QoS Parameters” of the net because the user guide shows that “Ostinato is a packet crafter, network traffic generator and analyzer”

The Needs:

§  Knowing the quality of our network between the Control Centre (RBC) an the Locomotive (OBC), and, it is an IP connection over our TETRA network for railway environments.

§  SW that generates traffic (UDP, TCP, ICMP) and shows the QoS of the network in real time to verify that it has properly behaviour.

But as you say, it is only a traffic generator!

Thanks for your attention

Sonia,

Can you elaborate on which "Qos Parameters" you would like to see?

This is useful input for future releases of Ostinato.

Mean latency to each terminal (loco?), max, duration of events where
latency over certain threshold value.
Bandwith attainable in streaming via UDP
Bandwidth attainable via tcp
Packet loss (max, mean, duration of events)
Jitter (max, mean, duration of events)

Availability of destinations, loss of it.

I guess she is looking to fulfill an RFP or such :)

It is necessary to get for different size packets UDP/ TCP/ICMP (e.g. 50 Bytes, 70 bytes, 178Bytes ,..) the follow "QoS Parameters":

- The maximum Throughput in Downlink and Uplink.
- The Delay in Downlink and Uplink.
- The Packet Loss in Downlink and Uplink.

Un saludo,
Sonia M.

Maybe those features were implemented, I used Ostinato about an year ago.
If you need basic analysis of throughput and QoS policies you could use Ostinato as a generator and Wireshark IO charts as analysis tool.

IMHO, these are troubleshooting/analysis tools, she needs a management one.

You can run drone on each end point, connect to both drones from the same GUI controller to test the above subject to the following limitations -
* Delay measurement is not possible - is planned for a future release
* TCP is not possible since Ostinato is stateless. In any case for TCP, packet loss does not make sense - something like number of re-transmissions might make more sense.
