Hello all,

During networking this term we were covering QoS but we didn't have access to the packet generator for practice as it was proprietary and only the prof had access to it.  I was looking for a solution during off hours to practice some concepts but found very few tutorials on how to generate packets that would be recognized by deep packet inspection.

Long story short after some research I figured out how and thought I would share it.  I'm sure there are many other tutorials that are better but if anyone in the future was looking for the same thing maybe this short tutorial and lab might be useful to someone.

Some interesting factoid, I was using two lab computers as drones with an i5 processor and 1Gbps NIC.  The router was a 2901 with a four port WIC switch.  I had both drones connected to vlan 1 on the WIC, first drone put the 2901 at about 95% cpu and the second drone pretty much took out the 2901 with the console port barely even responding.  Ostinato on the right hardware really does push out a lot of bits.  The second 2901, which was the second hop in this scenario was also hit pretty hard cpu wise even with nbar off.

Cheers,

Steve

Steve,
always nice to share. Thank you.
FTR, the 2901 is a border (WAN) router that is spec at 327kpps max
so you will easily knock it out with a giga link, even w/o NBAR or any
fancy service.
You need an ASR to route this kind of traffic :)

Steve,

Thanks for sharing!

Would you mind sharing the name of the proprietary tool that your prof
was using? As a believer of "learning by doing", I'm interested to see
if Ostinato can be used in schools and universities towards this end.

If your prof is interested and willing, I'd be happy to have a
conversation with him to explore opportunities in this regard - could
you check with him and let me know?

Thanks,
Srivats

Hi Srivats,

I have sent an e-mail to my prof to inquire about the tool he was using.  I'll report back once I hear from him.

Just as a follow up, I haven't heard back from the prof.  School starts again in January so I'll make a point to corner him and ask.

Hi Srivats,

Sorry for the delay, I have spoken with our program coordinator about Ostinato. I may have published my own tutorial but the college is unable to endorse or supply a packet crafting tool such as Ostinato to students due to network security policies.

Cheers,

Steve

Thanks Steve!
