Containerlab Licensing Errors

Hello!

I purchased and downloaded the 2.x lab license/image, but I'm unable to use the container due to a license error. The guide doesn't mention needing internet access or specifying the license key, but the container will refuse to activate out of the box. Any ideas?

Hi Kyle,

Thanks for reaching out. Sorry about the trouble - I’ll look into this first thing tomorrow morning (India time) when I’m back in the office.

In the meantime, could you please share:

• The exact error message or screenshot you’re seeing, and

• The container logs (docker logs <container-name> or equivalent)?

• Output of "docker images"

That’ll help me review the issue faster when I start.

We are still investigating this.

Meanwhile, is it possible to get network access on your host to activate your license?

Also your containerlab is on a VM host or a bare-metal host? Which distro?

The host has network access, but the licensing server is behind a firewall doing SSL MITM. Containerlab is running bare-metal on ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS.

I tested the same image file on a totally airgapped container via Ubuntu on WSL, and there was no license activation issue. Just to rule out containerlab being the problem, I started the container airgrapped on the baremetal Ubuntu host and got the license error. Kind of at a loss as to why it works on one and not the other.
