Hi all,

Does anybody know if church books from Norden can be accessed?

I had a researcher, Hilda Bruns who has since passed away and was a great resource to the Ostfriesland genealogy community, do some research on my Hasbargen line there. I believe she needed to go to the Ludgerikirche Norden church to view the records.

Moin Lin,

This is the question:

On 9 november 1743 Derk Gerrits from Norden marries Anna Tekes of the "Pekel A" in the protestant church of Oude Pekela, Groningen. Anna is the daughter of Teeke Lolkes & Trijntje Hemmes, both baptised in the same congregation.

I am aware of two children of Derk & Anna: Geertruid (bapt. 29 september 1745, Oude Pekela) and Trijntje (bapt. 10 september 1747, Oude Pekela).

After the baptism of Trijntje, I unfortunately couldn't find further traces of Derk or Anna.

So I am looking for a Gerrit, most probably married to a Geertruid, with a son Derk in Norden.

Lin,

Thank you for the news.  I always enjoy hearing about Ostfriesland.  I'd really like to take my son and his fiancée (and my husband, of course) there.  My son needs to see where his people came from.  I think he'll see our farmland differently.  Will you still be doing tours next year?

I told you that my father had died (2019).  My mother also died, in 2021.  My son and I are learning how to be farm landlords and good stewards of the family's 150+-year-in the family farmland.  It's a whole lot harder than planting, tilling, and harvesting.  We have a lot to learn.

On the subject of my parents' deaths, I haven't notified Menno and Elfriede Hippen.  I really must do that.  It's unfair to leave them wondering.  How would you suggest I handle it?

The rote grutze made a wonderful dessert for Octoberfest.  Even though I don't have a dirndl, I passed it around and told the guests that it was from my great-grandfather's part of Germany.  It turned out quite well, actually.

Hope all is well with you and your family.
