Hello everyone!!

My husband Sam and I are working on plans for a trip in late September & early October which will include a few days in the area of Groningen, Netherlands, and a few days in Weener, Germany, with a day to visit Mitling-Mark.  I am hoping that someone can offer some suggestions for locating cemeteries - so far I have identified the cemetery in Weener where Sam's ggg-grandparents (Roelf P Tepen and Frouke Sebens) are buried, but I can't remember which cemetery we visited in Groningen in 1987 where some of his gg-grandparents are buried. It seems like there should be more of his ancestors buried in those areas, especially Mitling-Mark. (I've been looking in Find-a-Grave, Ancestry, several other genealogy and archives sites, Google Maps, and general searches online.)

Also, what are some of the significant historic locations to visit in those areas? Any special events, festivals, etc? Our travel dates are still flexible at this point. I know that Weener has a history museum that we plan to visit.

Does anyone know if it's possible to go between Weener and Mitling-Mark across the Ems River by boat or if we will need to travel by bus/taxi/Uber? (I don't think we'll want to rent a car. We're traveling by train from London > Amsterdam > Groningen > Weener.)

I know that most people in the Netherlands speak English well. Is that also the case in the smaller towns in Osfriesland? I've been studying Dutch and German off and on for years but am far from fluent in either language. My husband doesn't speak anything but English.

If anyone wants to write directly, my email address is: bronleewe...@gmail.com

Thanks for any advice or information!

The cemetery in Mitling-Mark is adjacent to the church.  If you wish to get in a church you need to make an appointment.  Many of them are now locked due to vandalism.
There are few graves older than 50 years old in any cemetery.   They have only started a find-a-grave project in the past about 15 years!

My suggestion is to rent a car in Leer as this will give you the flexibility to see all you want - and on your time frame.  Milling-Mark is just south of Leer along the Ems River.

Bonnie,

For cemeteries in Groningen area you can use Graftombe.nl

Yes, most people in the Netherlands speak (some) English.

Kind regards,

Godwin

We found a number of my relatives' graves in a small village called Dielerheide. It was not far from Wenner. Some people spoke English, but not all. We were lucky in that a woman from the church came and visited the relative we were visiting. My husband can read high German, but not low German. We did just fine. They also got records from the church for us.

I want to thank all of you for the information and suggestions you have sent. I should have waited until this week to ask, because a few days after I wrote, we left on a camping trip at the Oregon Coast where we didn't have access to email, phone service, etc. We're back home now, and I'm trying to get caught up on things, and work on our travel plans.

At this point, we plan to travel from London to Amsterdam by train (through the "chunnel") on Sept 29 or 30 - our daughters will be flying out of Amsterdam on the 30th, I think. We'll be on our own for the Netherlands and Germany. We want several days in Amsterdam, but those can be either before going to Groningen and Ostfriesland or after we return to Amsterdam. We're flying home from Amsterdam because we can fly direct to Portland now. (We haven't bought plane tickets yet, so the return date is flexible.) And we will probably rent a car in Groningen to travel in that area and into Ostfriesland so we'll have more freedom to visit rural locations and other towns.

I've printed out Individual pages of all of my husband's ancestors who lived or died in Ostfriesland or the Netherlands, which should make it easier for me to look up information here, and during our travels, and also gives me a place to make notes for any information I find. I also read through my travel journal from when we traveling in the Netherlands in 1987, and found that my husband's Mulder GG Grandparents were buried in Zuiderbegraafplaats (literally, South Grave Place?) in Groningen. In 1987 we took photos of the memorials, but sadly, I haven't been able to find the hundred or so slides that I took on that trip... (I haven't seen them for years. I guess that's one of the problems with living in one house for almost a half century - things can simply disappear!)

Thanks again, and I'll be in touch with everyone who wrote. (Several emailed me directly, too.)
