Just got home from running errands and over 100 osprey's flew overhead heading south in Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida. What a beautiful sight to see.

Still good counts of Ospreys at Hawk Watch sites up and down the coast. These will be mostly juveniles, but also some straggler adult males. The females should all be settled down by now.

Question!  We are in waquoit bay, cape cod Ma.  There is an osprey nest on the tip of washburn island across from our house.  It appears there is an osprey in the nest.  Its freezing cold here.  The bay is partially frozen.  We have never seen an osprey here this time of year.  Anyone have any idea why this bird would not have gone South?

I imagine there could be a variety of reasons.  Ospreys do not have a lot of down and he/she will probably head south unless for some reason he/she cannot head south.  For example, a soft tissue injury or debilitation of some kind.  That one juvenile headed north a few years back.  If I remember correctly she ended up somewhere around the Great Lakes and things were beginning to freeze.  She figured it out and headed south but still ended up with an unfortunate fate later on.  Are you positive on the id of the bird?  Did you get a good look was there good lighting?
