Rough weather hit both Northern Pinellas and Southern Pasco today. An
osprey nest on a structure came down in the wind at the Duke Energy Power
Plant along the Anclote River and Gulf of Mexico. The mother osprey came
down with the nest clutching both babies. Neither hatchling survived. The
mother was thought to have a leg injury but it looks like she is standing
good and strong to me. Another nest in the immediate vicinity that had been
in a dead tree came down with the tree. One osprey chick perished, one
survived. He looks pretty good tonight and had a nice meal of fresh
tilapia. The mother and the chick will be checked over thoroughly tomorrow
at Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida. I think and hope both will check out
okay.
