We are looking for a research scientist to help run the Observatory on Social Media (OSoMe, pronounced awe•some) at Indiana University Bloomington (IUB). The official title of the position is Senior Project Coordinator (SPC). The Senior Project Coordinator will join the OSoMe senior management team — director Filippo Menczer, co-directors for research Betsi Grabe and Alessandro Flammini, co-directors for education Elaine Monaghan and John Paolillo, Dean James Shahahan, and associate director for technology Val Pentchev. The mission of the Observatory, which recently received a $6 million investment from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Indiana University, is to study the media and technology networks that drive the online diffusion of dis/mis/information. OSoMe offers access to data and tools for researchers worldwide to uncover the vulnerabilities of the media ecosystem and develops methods for increasing the resilience of citizens and democratic systems to manipulation.
The SPC has primary responsibilities for oversight and management of OSoMe research and development in the areas of computational social science and data journalism. The SPC leads outreach and collaborative efforts between the Observatory, other units within Indiana University, and academic, technology, and media partners worldwide. The SPC supports the OSoMe director in supervising students, seeking external funding to support the OSoMe research mission, and shaping the goals, policies, and priorities of the Observatory.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Computing, Network, Data, Physical, Mathematical, Information, or Media Sciences, or a related field. A solid record of publications in top-tier peer-reviewed journals or conferences, as well as strong coding and data analytics skills, are required. Good communication and writing abilities are a must.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of machine learning, large scale modeling and simulation, and big data analytics is highly desirable. Previous post-doctoral experience in an area close to computational social science, network science, data science, or data journalism is desirable.

Further Information
The appointment is expected to start as soon as possible, possibly as soon as 1 March 2020. It is for one year and is renewable for up to four additional years based on programmatic need, effective performance, and the availability of funding.
