we tried to backup/restore a database instance and ran into errors during restore:
Restoring from restore point: backup_snapshot_20210216_133917
Error: Failed to get snapshot metadata files from backup location. If you specified an archive to restore, please check the correctness of the archive specification. Otherwise run backup validation task.
We conducted following steps according to specifications:
1. We ran a backup an exisiting database that resided in a docker container (vbr -t init -c vbr.ini; vbr -t backup -c vbr.ini)
2. We produced a tarball of the resulting backup-directory.
3. We copied and extracted the tarball on the target server, where a database was already created.
4. We ran the restore command (vbr -t restore -c restore_full.ini)
From the error message something with the archive is wrong. How can we check its correctness?

The offending metadata keys are contained in the tarball as yaml files. The tarball will typically contain all the snapshots associated with the container, each might hold very similar metadata. You need to make sure to remove the offending metadata keys from every configuration file.
One thing I note though is that a point of failures is in the metadata (or snapshot) chunks. Missing/corrupt metadata chunks will still cause a complete failure of the restore process. In addition, it is possible that multiple backup revisions or snapshot ids could reference the same metadata chunks if they are refering to similar directory tree, meaning that some metadata chunks could be essential for multiple snapshots. In my view, it would be useful if robustness around missing/corrupt metadata chunks could be improved.
Thinking about this a bit further, perhaps a -copymetadata command would be a conceptually cleaner workaround - this would allow a user to make additional copies of a backup metadata to additional storage locations. With -bit-identical storage locations, these backup chunks should be able to be mixed with the original backup to reconstruct the snapshot metadata.
But in general a flag to allow metadata updates even if the file is unchanged. So if we chmod/chown and are doing backups. This would cause additional checks to the local file, but would keep those metadata in sync if changes to ACL occur.
Your recent backup job failed because there's an existing backup job in progress. You can't start a new backup job until the current job finishes. Ensure the backup operation currently in progress is completed before triggering or scheduling another backup operations. To check the backup jobs status, do the following steps:
When Windows Server backup attempts to back up a disk volume, a Volume Shadow Copy Snapshot is created for the volume. When the snapshot is created, any Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writer associated with the volume is called. If any of the VSS writers encounter an error, the entire backup job will fail. In this example, the SQL VSS writer is encountering an error and causing the backup job to fail.
I then flashed my Raspberry Pi SD card with the latest Octopi image. Once flashed I set up Octoprint and upgraded to 1.5.3 and then attempted to restore. When the restore file was downloaded to my iMac it automatically unzips the file. When I realised that Octoprint Restore wanted a zip to upload I zipped the files myself and then attempted the restore. The restore fails with the message "Not an OctoPrint backup, lacks metadata.json" I can confirm the metadata.json does exist and is part of the zipped file.
So not sure what Safari is doing but I would really like to be able to backup with the original backup from Safari, why can't I simply zip the files again and restore? Why is the metadata.json not being seen?
Did you use the same naming structure as the original backup? It should be something like:
octoprint-backup-20210219-190649
that's "YYYYMMDD-HHmmss". I don't know if that makes a difference but it's something to try. Also, what is the file structure within the zip file? metadata.json needs to be in the root directory along with plugin_list.json. Then a folder called "basedir" for the rest of the data. If metadata.json isn't in the right place I assume it wouldn't be able to find it.
One thing I have found is when you zip a folder, it ends up inside the folder so the path looks like backup.zip/backup/metadata.json, rather than /backup.zip/metadata.json as OctoPrint is expecting. To zip it up again properly I had to select all the root files (basedir, meta, plugins) rather than the whole file.
I rerun the build via CI to get a new version of the snaphsot, however my local .m2 is not updated with the snapshot even after cleaning out the local metadatadeploy cache. Running mvn clean install -U does not bring the latest version of the snapshot too.
What can cause a backup to fail with "The database update failed" or similar?
This error generally means that the backup appliance was unable to complete the database update for the backup. This more often than not is a secondary error to the actual root cause:

If the metadata collection process fails during a VM backup, normal streaming backup continues without collecting the metadata. However, this warning might indicate that some disks are not initialized or the VM might not support metadata collection.
In 11.22 and earlier releases, the metadata collection phase of a VM backup fails, and the backup job reports as Completed with errors. In 11.23 and later releases, the metadata collection phase of a VM backup fails, and the backup job reports as Completed with warnings.
We run into the same issue when we had to resotre the Nexus database from a backup which is not the latest. This had led to the corruption of multiple snapshot and release repositories which had uploaded newer versions to nexus and which is not recorded in the Nexus DB backup.
We deleted the mavenmetada.xml files of the affects components and uploaded two versions.
One to re-create the maven-metadata.xml and the second to repopulate the maven-metadata.xml with the history of all the verions available.
Is there a solution to this. We are also seeing this error. When we browse the repository in nexus-ui, everything is visible (possibly since metadata is present). But when clicking on any link to download, it fails (timeout). and nexus.log has same errors as above.

I'm not sure exactly where it is but you have to change "http" to "https" in a configuration file (I've seen this said to be the solution in similar reports, the files would be in MCP or whatever Forge uses for its development environment and you can do a file search for " " to find it). The downloads do appear to work once this is done so the files still exist online; for example:
-metadata.xml (broken)
-metadata.xml (working)
Also, I'd suggest making a backup of the development environment once you get it working, as I've done for my MCP 1.6.4 environment (after fully decompiling it and everything so all the game libraries and assets are included, including making a backup of the unmodified source files so I can simply copy them over when I want to start modding from scratch; of course, Forge wouldn't have such files as you don't modify the game directly); when I last got a new computer I simply copied the entire folder over with no issues (I just had to re-do the JDK environment variables).
