When editing ways, add a mode that supports snapping to right-angles to
support nice building outlines or similar.

This is easy when creating ways - use the first segment as the reference,
and make sure all subsequent ways are at 90deg steps after that.

Editing existing ways seems more complicated.

I would envisage this as a special action bar button only present when
editing ways that would need pressing to enable "right angle mode".

I would not limit to 90° steps but to snap 93° to 87° to 90.0° and the same
for 180° and 270° (maybe even in 45° steps).
Kind of like a snap-to-grid.

Problem is if you follow a road and your first segment is off by 2°.

I haven't come up with a nice and intuitive behavior for this yet.

This functionality is found in potlach2 and changes an object to right
angles after the object is created. I use this every time I draw a
building. Would be great to have this on the phone as digitilizing with
fingers is rather hard and inexact...

Something in this area would be a good feature for a release 0.91 or so. My
question is should this be a drawing mode as in "snap to 90°", or should it
be an orthogonalize function as implemented in all major OSM editors?

The later would seem to be less surprising and likely easier to use.

See https://code.google.com/p/osmeditor4android/source/detail?r=654

As in iD the function will only work on angles near 90° (+-10° in the case
of vespucci)

The current functionality seems to be good enough. Closing.
