Hi,

(If you only use OsmAnd from the Google Play store this app is completely useless to you)

I'm a heavy user of the nightly builds.
As I'm pretty lazy I was quite bored with the fact that downloading & installing the nightly (beta) takes quite some "tap" actions. I created a super simple apk with App Inventor to download the OsmAnd nightly from the OsmAnd download site (or from Google Play when you are tired from the nightly beta): open the app, tap the button, and downloading and installing begins.

See:

It simply downloads a nightly OsmAnd to the default download folder and starts the default android apk installer, or it downloads the release version from Google Play if you're tired of the beta version. Note that if you only use the Google Play version OsmAnd will be automatically updated, but the nightly will not. You can not use the Nightly build and the OsmAnd+ version at the same time.

You can find it on my public dropbox folder: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34701986/Osmand/OsmAnd_Installer.apk
Or if you prefer a QR code:

NOTE: Anyone installing the app (which is an ".apk" file) will need to change the setting on their phone to allow installation of non-market applications (but if you're a nightly beta tester you already had that):

To find this setting on versions of Android prior to 4.0, go to "Settings > Applications" and then check the box next to "Unknown Sources". For devices running Android 4.0 or above, go to "Settings > Security" or "Settings > Security & Screen Lock" and then check the box next to "Unknown Sources" and confirm your choice.

(I have no plans yet to publish this embarassingly simple apk on Google Play)

Thanks Harry

Seems to work OK for the nightly build.

Is it safe for free OSMand user to switch  between nightly builds ( to test ) and regular OSMand from Store  ?
Or, is it tricky and dangerous for data or configuration ?

OsmAnd Free and Osmand Plus store their settings data differently as Osmand is osmand.net.free and OsmAnd+ is net.osmand.plus. For android it means that they have separate folders (/data/data/net.osmand.free and /data/data/net.osmand.plus) for storing their settings.
By default they use /osmand on the SDcard for "external" data like the maps, render profiles, etc.
You can change this in the settings though.
I always have OsmAnd Free installed and a nightly build. They work fine next to each other sharing the same /osmand map folder.

Would be useful if it expanded to also allow installing from
http://download.osmand.net/night-builds/ in order to track down when a
new bug appeared.

Anyway, thanks for it :)

Hi,

I have just retracted the apk (probably just after you downloaded it :) ).
I was informed that the nightly build already contains this "download and install" possibility internally.
If you click the version number (#1234D) in the main screen, the nightly_builds folder will be opened and you can download and install OsmAnd nightly immediately.
This is/was an "undocumented feature".

(The first time you might need to tap up to 10 times. On susbsequent downloads one tap is sufficient)

Please note that the nightly build is a beta build and can and will contain errors you will not encounter in the Google Play stable versions.

That depends on which nightly are you testing, I supose that the one you
say is the default.

Please, somebody correct me if I am wrong.

A very useful feature, thanks for revealing it :)

I know, one can't make an omelet without breaking the eggs.
