Definition of GPX route options

I am looking for the definitive definition of the following choices when following a pre-recorded GPX route.

 

What behaviour to expect when ticked or left un-ticked on version v1.8.3

 

  1. Calculate route between points
  2. Pass along entire track
  3. Calculate OsmAnd route for first and last route segment.

 

On some routes I get option 1 only – usually when the route has a small number of waypoints – say 100.

 

On other routes I get options 2 & 3 only – usually when the route has a high number of waypoints ie a gpx recorded within OsmAnd with a few hundred of waypoints

Take this only as unofficial comment, as this is my understanding, than can be wrong in some aspects"

Calculate route between points : 

Normally OSMAnd taked GPX as serie of straight lines from point ly to point.    Many online tools generate detailed GPX file with dense point placement.
Calculation of route is good to be used in sparse route GPX, where points are rather just waypoints, not defining the route in detailed level.
It takes GPX points as serie of start and destination, like if you define waypoints and destination in OSMAnd manually.
Otherwise said it calculates point between GPX point, as it is done by these tools when generate dense GPX.

Pass along entire track
Forces you to go to the first GPX point and go along the all GPX route. Otherwise it should start just at the closest GPX point.
Not sure if it is exactly like that, as i have read about some GPX routing issues, if going off route.


Calculate OsmAnd route for first and last route segment.
  1. Makes the opposite to the 1st option.  While Calculate route between points makes sparse GPX dense, calculating route between sparse points,
    Calculate OsmAnd route for first and last route segment takes from GPX just start and destination, like if defined manually, ignoring inner GPX points.

Hey Chris,

As far as I know, the difference is in what is stored in the GPX file. Specifically, does the file have a route (<rte> elements) or a track (<trk>)? With a route, it makes sense semantically to calculate a route between the points stored in the GPX file, because that is what the <rte> points are supposed to be: waypoints of a route. With a track, calculating a route is not yet possible with OSMAND (although Garmin software seems to be able to) so you don't get the option. However it is assumed that a track is either detailed enough so that you don't need to calculate a route, or that the track does not follow roads in which case routing doesn't make sense either.

Some tools with which you can save GPX files also make this distinction clear. For example, when I make a route with www.motoplaner.de I can export it as a route or a track, and when I export it as a track the tool generates a number of intermediate points between the waypoints. The track file ends up being a lot larger, but it does save the exact route as you planned it, so OSMAND doesn't have to recalculate it. As far as I know, you can even follow the track without having the maps at all!
