Hi,

yesterday I got caught in a traffic jam. Unfortunately, I was on the motorway, and no chance to escape - 8km take quite a while if you're slower than pedestrians walking.

As I do not have a TMC antenna on my mobile, I assume we cannot use this feature, but are there any other solutions?
How is google maps traffic layer working? Any chance to have something similar available to enhance navigation in the future?

Thanks for your feedback!
Alex

p.s. the only post I found was in russian .. maybe it is the same, don't know :-)

I think Google has its app sending speed data from the app to a server so they can detect traffic jams based on the speed the phone or tablet is traveling, and the server then sends this data back to other phones and tablets.

Hello again,

I wonder if there is any progress / news on that topic.
There is e.g. an app INRIX - which as far as I know is also used from Garmin - providing live traffic. Or Nokias HERE ... it's not only Google, provigin this kind of service. But I do not want to load all the mapdata again and again ...

A change to add a live traffic layer on OsmAnd?
Any other idea?

thanks
Alex

I remeber reading there are issues with using the TMC data because the road references are not open data. I.e. you know 'way56253' has a delay, but you have no idea where on the map that is.

Other data may be even impossible to access for free.

But... a good start would be to have OsmAnd and other navigation apps collect data. Average speed for each stretch of road, together with time of day, could make the OSM data a lot better. Not as good as live traffic yet.

Having the 'supposed' speed in OSM, apps could start to send in differences to that. Not so much data to send, perhaps (not too) privacy invading, and with a clear reference: "hey, way463784 had a delay of 5 minutes on 12:34".

OSM data is used more and more worldwide. An open exchange of the delay data could find many users.

as long as the data is not sold to Google .. ;-)
I'd agree to share such data.

are user stats available? I'd be interested to know how many there are around Hamburg - that's for me the cruzial part - getting to and from work on the best possible way.
TMS is not worth taking into consideration. even the sucessor TMCPro is not longer state of the art and has been put aside in favor of GSM/mobile data...

I tried WAZE for a while - idea is great, but the data consumtion was enormous - For that money, I can afford a monthly fee for TomTom or Garmin Live Traffic service.

Any other remarks / ideas?

You could add the google traffic layer in osmand.

The .metainfo:

[url_template]
[ext]
png
[min_zoom]
5
[max_zoom]
17
[tile_size]
256
[img_density]
16
[avg_img_size]
32000
[expiration_time_minutes]
10

- In Settings in the plugin manager switch on online maps
- In Settings go to (the now available) online maps
- Select overlay map
- Switch on "Use Internet" (otherwise it will never work)
- Select bottom option Define/Edit
- It will give a (default) name NewMapnik; change this to Google Traffic (or another meaningful name)
- In the URL type the complete google address
- min zoom/max zoom are predefined
- set expiration time

In the Map in Map Layers, switch on Overlay map and select the "google Traffic" layer (or whatever you named it).

Play with transparency and so on until you have your preferred settings.

Harry

Seems like the OsMo plugin could do this by aggregating all data being sent in from devices currently navigating in bicycle or car mode.  Why bicycle?  If you've ever sat...and sat...and sat...and sat... not moving on a cycleway in Victoria, Portland or Amsterdam in slow or dead-stopped bicycle traffic, you'd rather go another way.

I just posted a new thread on OpenTraffic, which may address some of the points here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/DRJfvdN3MrM

People have different views on "necrobumping", so I posted a separate thread, but thought it may be helpful to link to it from here for anyone browsing the archives (as I was).

People who are bothered by continuing an old thread with relevant new material need to get over themselves and understand what context means...

Hello,

I tried to add this source as described:
http://mts0.google.com/vt?hl=de&src=app&lyrs=traffic&x={1}&y={2}&z={0}&style=15

My ".metainfo" looks exactly like sven posted, but it won't work for me :(

Version: nightly 2.3.0 (16.12.15)

However I realized that new directories and files have been created. They look like "12png.tile"
When I compare this with the files from CycleMap which is "12.png.tile", there is a dot before "png". Might this be the reason why it doesn't work and does someone know how to solve the problem?

Many thanks!

..after some hours of investigating and trying, I figured it out by myself. So for everyone who might have the same problem:

All the following server work (both http AND https):

...
...

Different map-layer I could find:
lyrs=m - roadmap
lyrs=t   - terrain
lyrs=p  - terrain + labels
lyrs=s  - satellite
lyrs=y  - satellite + labels

all these layers can be combined with the traffic layer:
e.g. lyrs=m,traffic
("traffic" alone does not work)

Different map-styles:
There are a lot of different map-styles which differ in the way how roads and names are shown. I was personally looking for a traffic-layer with nothing but the traffic-info.. the best style seems to be no. 15, but there are still some road-names:
styles=15
(leave this option away for the standard google map style)

I could not find a anything about the other option (hl= and src=).. so in the end I use this URL with Osmand:

..hope this helps someone
