After a journey in country which I don't known the language at all I'm thinking that will be very useful to have the Wikipedia POI's description in my language not on the local like is is now.

Bye, Mirco

P.S.: I travelled a lot by bicycle and OsmAnd was great!

It takes the Wiki info straight from the Wikipedia page so the displayed language will match whatever language the Wiki page is written in.  I just checked a couple of places in Perpignan, France & found that the major Wiki entries are in English, with smaller, probably very localised entries were in French & some even in Polish.  Checking online via laptop showed that the entries in French were taken from fr.wikipedia.org & those in Polish were from pl.wikipedia.org.  If it's in English it is likely to be a major place of interest as wikipedia.org will likely have the most complete listings.   Interesting, I wonder if would be possible to tell it where to take the Wiki downloads from.

Downloaded the Wiki's for several countries in preparation for going away in a couple of months - really looking forward to putting it to the test.

I agree, for me this is the goal, but I think requires a lot of effort.

Even better would be to have an external app to display the articles. Apps like Kiwix and Aard 2 support inter language links to solve the problem.
They also support images and a lot better formatting.

Are you guys trying this in OsmAnd 2.1 ?
It seems something has changed there in handling wiki articles.

In older versions you downloaded a wiki file for the whole world but only for a single language. So you downloaded only the languages you could understand. I think that was great.

What has changed now? It seems wiki files are now per country? Does such a file contain all the languages?

That's my conclusion as well. I'm using Dutch and English now (for my next holiday). The Dutch wikipedia is the 3rd biggest in the world after English and Swedish containing almost 2 million articles. (check wikistats: https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/Sitemap.htm)

I assume you have to compare the english wikipedia with a small country wikipedia to see whether it mixes articles, but I don't think so. Simply checking the download list shows that countries like Andorra are only 1.7MB. I really think the articles are now limited per country and in that language.

Only in the language of the country? That would be quite bad. We should investigate what really happens here (but I am not on 2.1 yet). As usual there are no proper release notes that would mention at least such important changes.

Using the USA California Wikipedia download on a recent hike, all of the POIs were, as expected, in English. Except for one, in German, from the German Wikipedia. As it turned out, there's no English Wikipedia equivalent for the entry. Pierce Point Ranch: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierce_Point_Ranch.

It is really confusing now. I just checked it in Germany, where most of the articles are in German. That's fine for me but what about people who do not speak German?

I have now checked it in v2.1 and yes, the wiki file for a country contains multiple languages (I can't say if all) of articles. That is quite a mess as now POI will be shown in languages that the user can't read. Also, the display in search wiki POIs it messy, e.g. it shows a an article with Polish name but when you click to read it it shown in Finnish. Yes, you can toggle the language to Polish in the top right quite small language selector. But that the initial language is incorrect seems to be a bug.

So it seems to me the new packaging is quite messy for the user. For the server it is probably better as users may download less data: if you downloaded e.g. English or German before, those files were several hundreds of MBs. Now if you download only wikis for several countries, it may be less. But if you used some niche language, now you will download much larger files with useless languages.
