I tried using archon to run the apk in Chrome, however I get an error for a missing version number:

Failed to load extension from: /******/******/net.osmand.android
Required value 'version' is missing or invalid. It must be between 1-4 dot-separated integers each between 0 and 65536.

Other apks (such as 2048 from F-Droid) seem to work fine.

Any ideas how to get this working or another good way to run OsmAnd on desktop linux?

Thanks.

I have osmand working on a win7/32bit pc in archon on Chrome.
Most things work - routing, search, download.... even plugings, geolocation and broute, but not offline maps have to use online maps.
I use osmand nightly build.

Here isa good source: http://www.reddit.com/r/chromeapks

I've run Osmand under Bluestacks on a Windows Laptop. The Laptop didn't have GPS, so I wasn't able to test navigation, but the app ran just fine and, with a bit of effort, I was able to transfer maps without having to download new copies.

Having got it to work, I did wonder why I had bothered - it's much simpler to use an Android tablet!

Thank you for letting me know it's just me.
Turns out I didn't set up archon correctly.
It works now :)

I am using BlueStacks too.
Fake GPS can help with GPS location and also I am using it for route planner check :)

You don't need to fake GPS.

First for destination:
long tap on the point you want to drive TO
then tap on the small window (not on the red cross!)
on the menu use "set as destination" for destination

and then same handling for starting point
long tap on the point you want to drive FROM
then tap on the small window
on the menu use "directions from" for starting point.

Now navigation will be calculated.
That's all.

Hi Peter

I am fully agree that the route can be calculated using the "Direction To" and "Direction From" options - I am using them too.

Fake GPS allow me to set up starting point using the GPS location and then define the "Direction To" location.
Once the route is calculated I can switch to the navigation mode and see how the route changes while moving GPS location.
By this it is possible to check if the route behaves normally, what will happen if you off the route and etc..

So it is quite useful too.

Areg

Hi Areg,
thanks for your information. I did not hnow, how powerful GPS fake is.
That is of course great and much more, than simulation within osmand can provide!

Hi

I have managed to run the OsmAnd on ARChon on my laptop.

There is something wrong on my workstation and seems I need to fully reinstall it as some other applications are behaving abnormal too.

By the way do you know where the maps are stored so I can copy them over the phone?

Areg

You need to set "enableExternalDirectory": true, and  "fileSystem": [        "write",        "retainEntries",        "directory"      ]

see the attached manifest.json

Thanks a lot.

And do you know where are the files will be located?

Seems it was necessary to cleanup previous stored files in chrome profile and rerun - now I can select folder.

I am looking now how to force config files to be stored at same folder and not in the profile with some unknown locations...

@Jan: What did you do to get it running? I did follow the tips about the enable extended directory and the others in my manifest.json and also tried yours, but the only thing that happens is that OsmAnd requests a map at startup and then does nothing: just a grey screen with the OsmAnd icon (and I use the nightly build as well).
I tried Chrome and Chromium version 37 and Chrome version 39 with archon 1.2.

A few other apps simply run. No problem whatsoever.

And I forgot :I already used the Chrome APK Packager to create a  "chrome extension compatible" zip.

Thanks. But it doesn't make a difference. Exactly the same behavior.

I'm by the way running a 64bit Ubuntu 14.04. According to "everything" that should work and it does, but not for OsmAnd.

Hi @hvdwolf

I have the same on my windows box that the changes in the manifest.json does not enable the option to choose a separate folder for data.

I have found that it still stored in some special folder in chrome profile like "C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Storage\ext\" "jenpiiablnefmiaaimapgmkgfpfebmni" subfolder ..

I have backed them all up and delete just in case if this is deleting any other extension configuration.

After that when I ran the OsmAnd it asked me for the destination folder and finally I was able to see the downloaded maps and other files, but not the configuration which is still under that strange file structure...

Hope this could help.

Areg

Also I have noticed that when I am trying to download updated maps Chrome does not allow OsmAnd to delete old file ...

And crashing when trying to open maps ...

Use safe mode or online maps (native lib)

I have tried OsmAnd~ 1.9#7875D on Ubuntu 14.04 and it's running OK, in the same manner as on win.
I use ARChon 1.2 and Chrome 38.

I have used android-x86 on virtualbox on my linux pc. Installing was difficult and I did have problems with running it.

Nowadays I use Genymotion. This works on top  of virtualbox but it does run much more smoothly on my pc then android-x86 does.

A couple of years ago Christian Foltin (ChrisFromFreemind) created Offroad which was described as "A Desktop port of OsmAnd".
I guess development stopped, but you can find it here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/offroadosm/files/OffRoad_Unstable/0.1-Beta2/

I found scrcpy to work best. No virtualization required as it runs directly in your OS. All you need is a driver for ADB.

I use scrcpy as well and quite a lot, but in that case it does not work on your desktop. It works on your Android device which you have to couple via adb over usb or over tcip. (The latter is how I use it).
If the OP really want to use it ON his desktop, he needs something else then scrcpy.
If he simply wants to "play" with OsmAnd on a big screen with a full-size keyboard instead of an on-screen soft-keyboard, scrcpy is a fantastic option.

You're correct, Harry. It was a mind shortcut of mine of it running "directly" on your desktop as opposed to running sth in a VM.
