Please can you look into providing us with os maps availability, possibly through uk multimap etc. This is all that osmand is lacking to make it the perfect app.
Many thanks,
steve

Developers please note.  Steve is probably referring to UK Ordnance Survey.  These have been known to Brits as "OS" since way back, long before the relatively new "Open Source" was conceived and hijacked the abbreviation.  Ordnance Survey are probably the best maps in the world.   speak from at least 60 years experience.
The addition of UK Ordnance Survey would indeed be a great improvement to OsmAnd (but maybe not cheap).

The expensiveness of UK OS is the main reason OSM was founded in the UK. The founders of OSM never thought OSM would surpass OS in quality of any form (spatial sprecision, update delay, completeness, ...) but that OSM could be a map that's "good enough" to use in many cases. However, in some areas, OSM surpasses OS quality wrt delay and completeness (many features that won't even appear on the OS maps are mapped on OSM).

So I'm not saying that it can't be done. But those complete maps will be really expensive, and probably require some DRM code too, which endangers the open-source nature of OsmAnd.

Regards,
Sander

Without getting into a text war or insulting osmand....The two major players on the market,  app wise both have the ability to use o/s topo maps at no extra cost. I love the ability on osmand to do turn by turn navigation on satellite maps...but is let down by poor quality maps for off road, over landing etc.

OSMAND normally uses maps based on OpenStreetMap and will use whatever is in OpenStreetMap.  It is however possible to load maps from other sources but you may have to convert the map to OSM format first then build an .OBF file, it is possible to do this but may take a little expertise when converting from the different formats.  Note this is not going from the tiles displayed on the web but from the underling database file which might not be easily accessible but I have no doubt that OS will sell you the data.  It might not be available for what you consider to be a reasonable price.

But os maps come with other off road(and on road) apps as part of the package. I am aware that there is map building software, as i have used it. But it does not use o/s or multimap  as a source. As it stands osmand offers turn by turn navigation, of which there are plenty to choose from in both range and easily comparable quality but no off road maps that have true os quality. Adding contour lines to road maps is not what rescue, police or other services would use.

But you have to pay, for loading down the tiles of OS. Look at all the apps using OS. you have to pay for a bigger amount of maps.

But that's my point...bc and alpine quest you don't have to pay for tiles you download...It comes with the app.

It would be nice, if you would not to use abbreviation (bc). There are no OS-Tiles in the free version of alpine quest.

Bc stands for backcountry navigator, and you can use ordinance survey maps but for a limited time (free version).
And that's my point...There are plenty of free gps apps out there, but not as good as osmand (+). To make it the perfect product, can't you look into providing some way of getting o/s maps in osmand...even if it's a separate applet that is paid for  ?

There is nothing to stop you loading your own maps into OSMAND many already do for specific applications.  DEM data is available, its purely a cost issue as far as I can see you'd like something for free or at low cost hoping there is a market for such a product.

Sorry

Many tilebased maps use the same system to the tiles. So it is very often possible to copy the folder from one app to the other and you can use it, in the other app.  Perhaps a solution to you.

But the OS tiles have a problem. They are big. I have been cycling this summer three weeks in Southengland. Google Tiles with London 2 GB. OS without Greater London 12GB.
