I have a .pbf file that I downloaded from geofabrik.de which a certain
post I found in the code pages says is not the correct binary to use
for allowing vector rendering on the latest version of OsmAnd. In that
post, a few users mentioned they used OsmandMapCreator 0.5.1 alpha
(b3) to take the .pbf and get an .obf file output which could then be
used by OsmAnd.

I downloaded 0.5.1 alpha (b3) but have no idea how to accomplish this
with the options I see in the application. I'm able to open the .pbf
file (which takes a few hours for an 85mb file) but once thats done..
what do you do?

Once you open that file you already generate it. So now you can find the .obf file in working directory. That's specified at the bottom of OsmAndMapCreator.

Thanks Victor. I've found the file, loaded it onto my android at /sdcard/osmand then in settings I went to Map -> Map tile source and selected Vector OSM Maps and deselected Use Internet.

When I get back to the map screen, a small message pops up and says "Vector maps were not loaded" (using OsmAnd 0.4.3 beta (b2)

The format is only supported by OsmAnd 0.5.1 alpha (b3).

Generally, use MapCreator version X with OsmAnd version X.
