FreeDrive mode

Hi

I would like to check if there is a possibility to have a free drive mode.

By the "free drive" term I mean the mode when you can start OsmAnd, open the map and just start driving without specifying the destination point, just to see where are you going.

I am often using OsmAnd during the driving in the are that I know and would like to see on the screen the "Street Name" and other options that available during the guided navigation (like a Speed limit and etc.).

I know that this discussed in another topic and it mentioned that street name and speed limit are available only in follow mode.

Yes, this is pending in my issue list. Actually I found for Free drive mode only 2 widgets are missing now :

1) Current street name

2) Max speed

But you should be aware that in that mode it could be very erroneous because GPS error sometimes go to 60m and it is very hard to identify on what street you are really on. Having complex predictive algorithms is not planned :)

I completely agree with you about GPS innacuracy but I think that same kind of problem can happen during the guided driving too.
I am not quite sure if there is a way to get accuracy value from GPS and show some warning if it is more than 10-20 meters?

Also it is absolutely not necessary to apply any algorithm to determine the exact location - it can be just assumed by best GPS signal and warn if inaccutacy is more than some value which can be configurable so anyone can choose as they wish.

And also if it will be possible to have the background service enabled for free drive mode so it will allow to keep GPS tracking if there is a incoming call or it will be necessary to switch to other application at some point.

The difference with guided tour that application suppose you go on the proposed way and that assumption actually snap you to the road.

I don't see why do you need background service because background service is used to say instructions during the call and record GPX track. But you can enable it manually.

Hi

I assume in this case in Free Drive mode App can show the details of the nearest road.

I understand that this is adding a bit analytical part which nearest road to choose if there are couple of them near but this can be simple choice of the nearest one to the GPS detected point.

I will try to enable Background Service (Sleep Mode) to see how the GPS track will be recorded.
