The Android app Oruxmaps is able to read garmin  .img files and thus show garmin maps. This gives us the possibility to use many maps like these. It would be great if Osmand would be able to do the same. If it's possible I can imagine that I would use a bicycle specifice garmin map like this as an overlay and meanwhile use the routing options of the original offline Osmand map. Are there any plans to do this?

There is a bicycle style in osmand. Can that help you?
I'ts true that bicylce style needs more work, but there is an option to use it.

I know there is but Osmand lacks the ability to render OSM (route) relations. The Openfietsmap shows the cycleroute networks (ncn / rcn / lcn ) .Besides it also shows the numbers of the cyclerout junctions.  But still it would be nice to have many other garmin maps available to choose from.

I think this will be impossible to support IMG file on the device. So if any tool could be found that converts IMG->OSM.xml then we can easy convert OSM->OBF and configure special rendering.xml

Thanks

I think there is no need for IMG->OSM.xml because those IMG files are created from OSM.xml.
Solution would be a modified OSM.xml with special renderer.

I don't know how Oruxmaps does is but it works OK. It just shows the Garmin maps. It does not need any routing information (Oruxmaps is not able to calculate a route). For Osmand I would be more then happy if it could just show the map. No need to convert to OBF. I think just a conversion to some format that just shows the map would be OK. Routecalculation in Osmand could stil be done with the offline OBF as underlay.

If Oruxmaps can show these maps then why can't Osmand (I am not ICT expert so it may very well be that I'm talking nonsense here ;-) )
Here's a picture of Oruxmaps showing the Garmin Openfietsmap. This maps shows the bicycle route relations (the dotted blue lines)
