Gaps/drop-outs in track recording - any ideas how to avoid or fix?

I have been using Osmand's track recording feature while hiking on my previous phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 / Android 5.1) very reliable for years. On my new Samsung Galaxy S7 (Android 6.0.1) the recorded tracks always contain gaps or large jumps, i.e. the tracking and/or recording obviously frequently has drop-outs and doesn't work reliably.

I am typically recording every 30 seconds, which is sufficient for my purposes (leisurely hiking, not running or jogging) and I carry the device typically in a pocket of my trousers' legs. I also tried carrying it in the topmost pouch of my knapsack (i.e. more or less right behind my head), but that didn't change anything.

I doubt that the issue might have to do with the time-till-fix on the S7 since the S7 is always VERY fast finding a fix (I estimate about 2x as fast as the S4 on average).

I disabled Android v6' power saving mode for Osmand.

Any idea anyone what else could cause these unreliable track recordings?

Could it be an antenna issue? Do you hike in places where the signal
might be marginal or erratic, like forests or canyons? I always used
to get big jumps and long dropouts on an older Android device when I
hiked in forests because the trees would block the signal -- at least
I always assumed that was the problem, since it didn't happen when I
hiked in more open areas.

I can confirm drop outs if it is in standby. Sometimes it works, sometimes when if open it from standby it has stopped recording but starts again.

Does the S7 have some "advanced energy preserve" settings thereby switching off GPS when it "thinks" it does not need it?

I assume that you did check your "locating method" as such (gps only, wifi and data networks only, all)? Based on your remark that it is normally VERY fast I assume you have all 3.

I have a Samsung S3 Neo, which has a  "advanced energy preserve", but switched off.
The problem is new to the past weeks.
And when recording parallel with OSMTracker on same device, OSMTracker has no gaps where osmand has gaps (2.4.0#18527).

Harry,

Yes, the S7 has both a Power Saving Mode and an Ultra Power Saving Mode.

In Power Saving Mode, GPS performance is reduced, among other things.  When the screen is off, I think it turns off the GPS receiver.

In Ultra Power Saving Mode, even more things are turned off, whether or not the screen is on.  GPS is switched off completely in this mode, although you can turn it back on again.

That would indeed explain the dropouts, but I have DISabled power savings mode (actually: never ENabled it) on my S7 and I am nevertheless seeing these dropouts.

Also, if I interpret this correctly, this would mean that there would be *no* trackpoints recorded at all, while the mobile is switched off. But that is not the case - it *does* record points while it is switched off, simply not all the time as I would like to. :-(

Hi,

you can set "Battery optimisation" to "not optimised" for the OsmAnd app.
MORE, on the upper right corner of your first screen shot, I guess.
Maybe this helps on your device.

Max
