Please advise - How to view Osmand files in Samsung Galaxy? SM T560, running Osmand+ 2.3.5 in Android 4.4.4.
Using MotoG with Osmand + 2.2.4 in Android 5.1 there is no problem, I can see the files using ES File Manager. or using laptop and USB cable.
I'm hoping to copy Favourites/Favorites/My Places from one device to the other.
Thanks

It should work the same as on your MotoG but obviously it doesn't.
Don't you have a /Android/data/net.osmand.plus folder on your Galaxy.

And the other way (like I also mentioend earlier today for another question :) ) is to go to my places and in the main screen tap the share icon (bottom left). You can then share it to  google drive, mail, microsoft OneDrive, Dropbox or any other suitable sharing option.
Also: If you install the (free open source) total commander, which is a file manager that supports sharing, you can share to Total Commander which can simply save the favourites.gpx to a location on your phone/tablet which you can later retrieve via the PC.

Hello Harry.- Thanks for the feedback.

1a) The Galaxy does have a folder called "/Android/data/net.osmand.plus " but ther seems to be nothing in it!
1b) In the Moto G, the Osmand files (many) are in a clearly visible folder "Osmand" located between "Notifications" and "Pictures".

2a) The file manager in the Galaxy is ZenUi ASUS File Manager.
2b) The file manager in the MotoG is ES File explorer.
Apart from personal preference/habit, is there any significant difference between them and "total commander"?

3) The "Share" method is the one which was eventually successful. I emailed it to myself, and was then able to copy the GPX file into "Downloads" in the other device, and follow the instructions for merging into the "My Places" already present there.

So, partial success, enough to get me "on the road", but there is still the mystery in (1a) above which it would be useful to resolve for future convenience.

Regards.

Hi,

w.r.t. to 1a)
-Can it be that you are still using the "old" /osmand folder in the root of the device. On 4.4 you still have more "freedom" on the internal memory of your device than on the external SD-card?
- Your ZenUi Asus filemanager also has a search option. Did you try to search for favourites.gpx? or for example "World_basemap.obf"?
- Check your OsmAnd settings -> general settings -> Data storage folder. What does that mention? Could that by any means be "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files" ?

Hi Harry
The Galaxy is new to me so your reference to - the "old" /osmand folder goes over my head - Sorry.
Searches for either "GPX" or "World" find nothing.
In OsmAnd settings -> general settings, I can see "Data storage folder". The text under that heading is "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files"
What does that tell us?
FWIW- The options offered seem to be; Shared memory, External storage 1, External storage 2, Internal application memory (currently indicated), Manually selected.
AFIK there is no SD card currently installed.

Hi,

What I mentioned with the "old" /osmand folder is that there might be a folder osmand in the root of your storage structure, so on the highest level.

That /data/data/  is a "hidden" app storage folder of Android. All application store their data and settings in their own program folder below that /data/data.
Android makes sue that only the app itself can access that data directly  so that it can't be modified by malicious software.
Due to security reasons Android does not show that in the browser, only when your tablet/phone is rooted.

The big disadvantage is of course that you can't easily access your own data.

There were quite some posts lately about this issue.

Please try the following:
- go into your zenui file manager to /Android/data/
- long tap the net.osmand.plus folder
- If it gets selected see if you have some option like "Properties" or "Data" and click that one.
- Check if it shows the full file path which could be something like "/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/net.osmand.plus"
- Add that full path into the storage path inside OsmAnd.
- If that works you have from now on full access again to your data.

One append.

You might get a read-only error for your "/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/net.osmand.plus" as that is again a sometimes occuring Android 4.4. and Android 5.0 error.

Hi Harry
Despite having taught IT for many years, this still challenges me!

So, here is some info FWIW:-
The tablet is not rooted.
Using file manager, a search for "Osmand" finds:-
net.osmand.plus = /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb
net.osmand.plus = /storage/emulated/0/Android/data

When I long-tap the first I can get offers of; Move to, Copy to, Add to Favourites, Create shortcut, Rename, and Information.
In "Information" it shows - Name = net.osmand.plus, Path = /sdcard/Android/obb/net.osmand.plus, Size = 0.00B, Permission = DRW, Amendment date = Thursday 14/07/2016 22:58, Number of files = 0.
For the other one it shows - Name = net.osmand.plus, Path = /sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus, Size = 0.00B, Permission = DRW, Amendment date = Wednesday 129/06/2016 14:21, Number of files = 0.

In your final paragraph you say " ... Add that full path into the storage path inside OsmAnd." - At the moment I am unsure what you mean by "the storage path inside OsmAnd.".  f/when I find it, how do I " Add that full path" to it?

Thank you for your persistence!

The path ending in obb is the "public" app data folder that facilitates encryption via OBB files so that only the app can access it.
the path ending in /data is the "normal" data storage path where app data gets stored without encrypting it.

in Osmand in your settings -> general settings, you have your "storage path" . This determines where OsmAnd has its data stored.
After my question you mentioned yourself :) a couple of mails ago:
"In OsmAnd settings -> general settings, I can see "Data storage folder". The text under that heading is "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files""

Replace that "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files" with "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files"
Check whether OsmAnd accepts that and will copy its data to that folder. If it does not you can delete that folder "/net.osmand.plus/files"  inside "/Android/data/" first in the file manager and then try again.
If it is successful you can from now on access the osmand data.
And the adding itself is simply typing in the full path.

Note that the prefix "/storage/emulated/0" is the same as " /sdcard" (softlinks) and refers to internal memory.
The "/storage/ExtSdCard" refers to a real sdcard, which you do not have.

Hi Harry
One step forward, but ....
In OsmAnd settings -> general settings, I found "Data storage folder" and the text under it "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files".
I changed "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files" to "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files".
Returning to the map, my "Places" were visible as discs with stars in them, but the map was blank!

I reset "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files" back to "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files".
Then I set it again to "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files" but this time noticed the option to "Copy the data....." (or words to that effect), which I this time accepted instead of selecting "OK".
After a delay while copying, it asked again about "Copying OsmAnd data files" which I again accepted instead of selecting "OK".
This seemed to need to be repeated for each file/type.  (Slow & tedious process)
France_bretagne_europe.obf repeatedly failed to transfer so I gave up and pressed "OK".

Returning to the Map, it was clear that most of the detail was not visible, so I went to Manage Map files and re-downloaded France-Brittany.
Does this mean there is a redundant copy of the Brittany file somewhere? - And maybe others?  If so, how should they be found and removed? (to save valuable space!)

Yes, I'm afraid you now have a redundant map.

What you could do is the following (which I did once some 1-1½ year ago).
- Copy or simply rename your "new"  "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files"
- Uninstall OsmAnd (this will get rid of all the data)
- (Re)Install OsmAnd
- At first (!) startup, immediately go to that storage path and set it to  "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files"
- Close Osmand (and really close it)
- Now move/copy the contents of your renamed or backuped folder back into that  "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files" folder
- Restart OsmAnd and it should work. Notice that it might take long to start as it will probably first index all maps again

Note that you can only safely do this with the same OsmAnd version. Don not mix a 2.2 with a 2.3.5 or so

I must resolve or abandon this, before going away tomorrow for a week.
Is the OsmAnd uninstal and re-instal done to erase the unwanted and inaccessible file/s?
Can I save time and complication by omitting your first step "Copy or simply rename your "new"  "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files""?  (The Galaxy is new to me so there is not much saved OsmAnd data, only a few Favourites which I could copy from the MotoG, and the recently installed maps)
The rest of your instructions are very clear and look straightforward. :)  - Thank you.

Yes, the uninstall is meant to get rid of all data

If it is a new install anyway you can simply uninstall and do a fresh install

"The best laid plans ....."
"Nautical" & "Contour lines" uninstalled.
Osmand+ "Uninstall" button is greyed out!
Does the "/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files" have to be reset to "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files" before uninstall can be achieved?
Or is there another solution?

Hi Harry
Update
I tried resetting ""/sdcard/Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files" to "/data/data/net.osmand.plus/files". - Still unable to uninstall Osmand+
I've also used OsmAnd to delete the few installed map files. - Still unable to uninstall Osmand+.
What next please?

Further update.
Initiative took hold!  Discovered how to remove Administrator privileges in Android, Settings, etc.
Osmand+ now uninstalled (I think).
Onward ..... (Watch this space.)

Nice to hear.

The "administrators"  option of OsmAnd is activated if you have the screenon/off option enabled for cycling.
That's causing it (if there comes a next time ;)  )
