Hi!
(As first, I'm sorry for my English skills, I know it could be much better, but I'm sure that you'll understand me).
As I live in Czech Republic, I'm usually using map portal Mapy.cz, same as many Czech computer users (it's very popular here). But I noticed that GPX files generated by Mapy.cz are very poor, containing about ten waypoints per 100 kilometers (way from my home to capital city). I was writing with tech support and they wrote me it's especially because of old and cheap GPS devices that can't open too big GPX files. So Mapy.cz are exporting small GPX files with "waypoints you must ride through" and GPS navigation have to find out rest of way. And that's problem, because OsmAnd is trying to ride directly from one waypoint to another across fields, lakes, houses,...and that really isn't good idea.
I was thinking if is possible to add something like "reroute GPX" option into GPX import menu? It would be really similar to normal route planning, just automated. Instead of clicking on the map and setting waypoints you just choose this minimal GPX file and check Reroute GPX. Then OsmAnd will automatically set up all waypoints from GPX file and route track through them. I think it could be helpful even in another cases, somewhere I heard that Garmin also uses those poor GPX files.
If there will be something like "doesn't care about order" option, then it could be also useful for Geocaching (every waypoint = cache) and similar things.
But back to Mapy.cz. There are actually only two ways how to use Mapy.cz with OsmAnd:
- generate GPX file and guess where to ride (really bad idea)
- generate KML file and convert it to GPX (because KML contains all points and OsmAnd can't read KML)
In second case I think it wouldn't be that difficult to add KML support,
it's just differently formated GPX and there are many Google Maps user
who would like it. We don't care about KML generator, we just want to read our KML files, really.
(Of course I can plan route on my tiny mobile phone screen, but dragging of
waypoints with mouse on big screen is really much better).
Thank you for reactions,
glad Czech user of OsmAnd
