does osmand no more calculate a route without working gps?

I am irritated: up to not long ago I could calculate a route between 2 positions at home without gps switched on. now it doesn't work anymore. do you experience the same?

For V4.8.4 offline routing (GPS switched off) works just fine (just
tested to be sure).

You do have to define a start and endpoint that is not dependent upon
GPS (so Osmand's default start point of "my position" will not work
with GPS off, as "my position" needs GPS to know where to start from).

of course, that is what I mean: 2 given positions - but no more calculation!

to be more exact: navigation seems to start, but does not continue after some 10% (of the blue line), which reached in 2 seconds. there it stops.

How much distance apart are the start and destination. For longer
distances it can take OsmAnd some time (longer than 2 seconds) to
complete its routing computations.

I tested 4.8.4 with a route of about 1-2 miles, and it completed
reasonably quickly.

Just retested, with a route that OsmAnd says is 2.49 miles long, it took
about 11-12 seconds to compute, all with GPS turned off.

you are right, xavier. when I had almost forgotten about it, osmand spoke and returned a route of less than 200km after some 10 minutes. for years I have been using a 1,2-routing-xml, which take some 10 seconds for the same task. but all of a sudden my phone seems to have forgotten about it. I already asked harry-the-wiz if I should just re-install the 5 year old file again ... osmand sometimes is like a diva ...

even after re-installing the (1.2)routing.xml + restarting android + osmand it takes about 3 minutes to calculate a 70km route, while magic earth (harry's choice) takes 2 seconds. it worked well for quite some years (maybe 30 seconds for 200km, and even 400km worked in maybe a minute) but now they obviously screwed it up ...

Hi,!
Do you use custom routing.xml file?
I think we have similar issue on GitHub https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/issues/20221.

I tried to understand what they write there, don't really seem to get it. is there a bug in the actual version? when will it work again? what is HH? can I get it to work again myself? the standard routing xml was way to slow, but now the custom one is even slower. look for another app? magic earth is a bit too essential for my taste, with a quick first test I wasn't too happy ...

Latest version using new routing algorithm Highway Hierarchy (HH), it could calculate long routes much faster than previous one, but all used maps should be updated. By default HH is set for all users as default algorithm. You can provide coordinates for start and destination, so we can test it.

This new routing algorithm is indeed much (!) faster for normal car use.
And you say: "all used maps should be updated".  As of which date? I have the latest maps.

But the new algorithm is not consistent: When I now configure truck mode (for my caravan) and set width and max speed to 95 km/h, it acts differently.
When calculating the route to the camping (going in a week) of 300 km via standard car mode it is very fast (2-3 seconds?). However, when I use truck mode, it suddenly takes ages to compute the exact same route. After 2 minutes I cancelled the calculation. (that's why I ask about the maps "as of which date")
And it should be the exact same route as I know the route and apart from traveltime (longer), it is indeed the same route.

When doing other calculations to other destinations, it varies. Sometimes it is as fast as car mode, and sometimes it takes ages or does not finish at all.

maps are newest. I have a 1,2-routing.xml harry sent me a while ago installed. even for a route of 63km (precalculated, no GPS) osmand now takes 150 seconds. it does not work anymore, and others report these problems since many weeks. any hopes for the better or no more osmand?

could it help and make osmand work again, if I reinstall it? how do I have to do that to keep my many installed maps and settings? as for now, osmand became useless.

To save the maps and most? settings,
find the folder similar to
/storage/023C-DC9E/
Android/data/net.osmand.plus/files
move or copy that folder, uninstall and reinstall osmand, replace the new folder with the old one

I have some 20gb of data saved in osmand, but that folder has a size of just 155kb. would your proposition work?

I don't think this will work with newer versions of android.
Settings and maps can be exported and imported, or synced to osmand cloud. https://www.osmand.net/docs/user/personal/import-export

If you want to know where your maps are stored look in menu, settings, osmand settings, data folder. It's possible you can't see them due to android security policies. If you can see them you can copy them somewhere else to save them and import them one by one by opening them in a file manager in android (choosing "with osmand").

Hope that helps

By default Osmand stores everything below its own data folder where you don't have access anymore from android 9+.
If you go to settings -> Osmand settings -> Data Storage folder,  you can select where to store your data.
if you now change it, Osmand will move the data and restart.
As of that moment you can backup your data.

wow harry, that is great news, I had never read that before in all the discussions about inaccessible osmand files! now I did as proposed and will de-install osmand in order/hope to get it back to working. as you know it had become unusably slow. please tell me/us: what within the completely copied files-folder should I NOT copy to the newly installed osmand plus in order to make it work as it did for a very long time? remember: there is also your 1,2-routing file as routing.xml! thanks a lot!

i now have de-installed osmand+ and reinstalled. the blank osmand looked different, dark mode - which i would prefer. then I deleted all within the files-folder and copied what I had previously saved from mine, some 18gb. the dark mode is gone, don't know how to refind it. and the thing is as slow as before and takes some 2 minutes for less than 70km. almost 3 minutes for 219km. how can anybody use this? and why does it do so, as it worked well for years and took just some seconds for such calculations?

Day-Night mode.

Menu -> configure Map -> Scroll way down to "Map mode". There you can find options for light, dark, follow sunrise-sunset, etc.

no, I do not mean the map mode. osmand looked different after fresh install, like a new app, text on dark grey ground. after inserting my stored files that is (of course) gone.

but what does it help: it doesn't work anymore. and I have many dozens of placemarks from years in there ...

Your favorites and waypoints should be automatically backuped every time. Can you search for favourites.xml or favorites.xml?

shure, but as osmand does not work any more I have to look out for other apps. but tools as magic earth and so on do not seem to support flags of any kind.

I de-installed again and try it from scratch. I have this new dark look (without my old files reinstalled) and osmand works well when i just now downloaded a map! please, harry, help me: I want my placemarks (those flags of different colors) and my profiles - without blocking osmand again. but I have no idea WHAT made it disfunct. which from my saved files can i copy into "files" without risking that?

as soon as i copy anything from my saved files to the newly installed osmand+ it stops working well. even though there IS no routing.xml within files and I avoid copying mine. I now did that 4 times and have to realize I have to build up all and download a dozen gb of maps anew. could someone please tell where in my old files my saved placemarks (colored flags) are hidden, as I do not find the right place?

it worked somehow today. but there are no favourites.xml or favorites.xml within my stored files. and I would LOVE to get my settings/profiles back - if they would not destroy osmand again ...
