After looking through the app settings, searching the website and these messages I still have a question. I'm thinking about updating the sat nav and radio unit in my car to a more modern system like Android Auto. Would OsmAnd work with such a system?

No and Yes!
As far as I know OSMAND is NOT working with Android Auto per se, Google Maps and Waze are as far as I know the only 2 navigation apps working directly.
But, there is a tool AA-Mirror (https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/android-auto-general/mirror-screen-android-auto-disucssion-t3734180)  which allows to run ALL apps in Android Auto, it requires a rooted phone, the installation is a little tricky, at it might not run your phone.

@GeneW, you've got an overwhelming array of options when it comes to upgrading the unit in your vehicle.  Personally, I opted for an Android head unit to put in my truck for navigation while pulling our 5th wheel trailer.  With an Android head unit pretty much any app that you can install on your phone you can install on the head unit so you're not constrained by compatibility issues like you are with a proprietary system like Android Auto. The head unit that I went with is the ATOTO A6 2DIN A6Y1021PR.  It has a 10" display that sits out away from the dash a little ways and has a little bit of up/down/left/right tilt so you can get a good viewing angle.  I've had it for about 4 months and we just returned from a 4800 mile trip and I am completely satisfied with it.  I set mine up with Car Home Ultra as my home screen. There's an excellent tutorial on setting up Car Home Ultra here on YouTube: https://youtu.be/ATHzb5HSPRQ

I know this is a little off-topic for an OsmAnd forum but just wanted to throw this out there as a hardware option for running OsmAnd.

I'm a little curious about the clearances and fit, since my truck has a bit of a lip to the dashboard right above the stereo and one of those fun to work with 1.5U GM stereo bays.

There are quite some companies selling android head units. I myself have now my 3rd Joying head unit.
You need to check with the several manufacturers which options you have. Most 7", 8" and 9" units fit inside your dashboard, but you have to look which manufacturer has one specifically for your brand, or the best "universal" that fits your truck's dashboard best. I'm afraid though that they do not have much "brand fitting" units for trucks.
The 10.1" models (mentioned in the previous mail) almost never fit your dashboard and they are indeed positioned in front of your dashboard. You can consider that ugly, but now that I have the 10.1" I'm really happy with it.
My latest one (1½ week now) is also a 10.1" single-din unit with 2-din bracket in my Skoda Octavia. Previous ones were 8" models fitting in my dashboard.
See attached (reduced) images.
The big (Chinese) brands are Dasaitu (Hot audio), Joying, Seicane, Atoto. I would stick to one of those bigger brands as the "unnamed" ones most have bad support.
You can also buy a Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony or Alpine, but most of the time they are 3-4X as expensive, indeed of better quality, but sometimes also with questionable support.
Skoda delivers 2 units: 1200 euro and 1900 euro. This Joying one in the images is 466 euro with IPS-screen and it fits my needs perfectly (The previous 8"ones were 289 and 329 euro). As you can see: I run a specific "car launcher" on it (carwebguru, but there are others as well) with big buttons etc., but you can also install Nova launcher or whatever It is android, so you can indeed install almost any app you like.
I mostly use OsmAnd+ for it for its customisabilty (normal car profile with increased heuristic coefficient and caravan profile), but use MagicEarth for long drives where I want to know traffic info. But any Android nav app will function.
Just do some investigations for yourself and then check https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/android-head-units and https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/mtcb-android-head-unit-general (2nd one is about MTCB/C/D/E units from several suppliers who are all universally compatible. I do not have such a unit, but is does simplify things if you are into modding/rooting/custom roms).

Success.

Sorry. I forgot to mention that Android Auto does not support OsmAnd (it is not the other way round).
Only(!) Google Maps and Waze are supported by Android Auto. (Android Auto is Google and so are Waze and Google Maps).

Paul, here is a link to the ATOTO web site that gives some dimensions for the unit: http://www.myatoto.com/index.php?m=content&c=index&a=show&catid=15&id=57

If your faceplate really is only 1.5U it probably won't work.  You need a full 2DIN opening for this unit.  My truck had a 2DIN faceplate but the internal (guts) of the unit was only 1DIN.  I had to remove some sheetmetal under the dash to get this unit in.  But I knew that ahead of time based on reports by others.  The modification that I had to make does not cause any structural integrity issues and does not prevent reinstalling the old unit if I want to.

In my 2014 RAM 2500 the display is perfectly positioned, it does not block the heat/AC vents and it does not interfere with my manual stick shift.  The screen does not have a polarized filter so polarized sunglasses do not block the display (at least I have not had any issues with that).  I also like that it has a physical volume knob. In fact, it was one of my "must have" requirements - I hate fiddling with on-screen controls when I need to quickly increase or decrease the volume.

I read this link:

With that I think the OsmAnd team can make work for getting it to Android Auto, that would be really horrific.

If you are talking about head units you don't need Android auto.
I now have my 3rd Android head unit and I simply run OsmAnd and MagicEarth on it (next to a bunch of other Android apps).
No need for Android Auto.
What's more: Android auto would severely cripple many OsmAnd functions, due to Android Auto policies.
No, I prefer 10.000 % Android OsmAnd over Android Auto with mutilated OsmAnd..

Nevertheless,  https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2020/10/introducing-android-for-cars-app-library.html  implies that OsmAnd can be made working for Android Auto, and not the other way around. So I think your team should make work of this.

You could add your comments to the existing feature request - https://github.com/osmandapp/Osmand/issues/3391

Hope that helps

There is no *team* here. This list is a users list. While a developer
does, sometimes, drop by, no one else here is anything other than a
user helping other users.

The team, i.e., the deveopers, can be contacted via the OsmAnd Github
repository, primarailly via the issues list:

https://github.com/osmandapp/OsmAnd/issues

That is the communications channel with which to contact the developers
(whom are the only ones capable of "working" on anything with regards
to OsmAnd).
