OsmAnd stops showing map

I use OsmAnd for navigation in car. I really like and use the option, which shuts down the screen and turns it on again once there is a crossroad or another announcement. In this usage scenario I noticed one serious problem. When Osmand turns on the screen, it is initially in portrait mode and then switches to landscape.

Sometimes (in about 1/3 cases) switching from portrait to landscape causes that OsmAnd stops showing any map. All the instructions and trip informations are there and the navigation continues but no map data are displayed. The only thing I can do in this situation is to stop the navigation, manually kill Osmand and start it again. Then Osmand works correctly again but after a few screen orientation changes the problem appears again.

I use the latest 2.0.4 version. I don't know if any older 2.x version had the same problem but it worked fine in the previous 1.9.x versions.

Do you have any idea what might be causing this?

I have found that when using Osmand V2.0.4 that the map disappears if I zoom out to greater than 10Km on the scale of the map. Less than that and it works fine. It happens on both of my devices which have Osmand Free installed (phone and tablet). As with the other post the navigation continues and everything else seems to be functioning. This did not occur in previous versions. I have only the one map (Australia-Oceania) installed. Could it be memory related as both my devices have small memory?

No, this is no memory issue.
You should download the world map. That one is used below zoomlevel 11 which is approximately your 10Km scale.

Ah ha!

I'm also having this problem - the map goes blank and the app slows down, eventually crashes or stops responding...

I'm using it for mtb trail navigation.
The problem only really occurs on the trail - road seems mostly ok.

I think the cause is maybe the trail is rough, the phone shakes a lot and thinks its being reoriented (portrait to landscape and back) all the time rapidly.

This then causes osmand to throw a wobbly as it tries to re-display the map! Maybe?! Perhaps?! What do other people think?

I can set osmand to a single orientation in its options, and the phone also...

I'm pretty sure I tried osmand with fixed orientation though with the same problem..

Samsung S3..

Hi Harry,

Thank you for the advise. It has solved my problem.

Cheers.

Hello everyone!

Good news!

After locking the phone orientation in android and setting osmand to use the same orientation as the phone it now does not suffer any problems when off road over bumpy terrain..

Excellent!

Now just need to sort some usability problems :)

My problem is definitely not missing world map. I have the latest version and the problem still exists even with 2.1 version. If I leave my phone in portrait mode and turn the screen off, before every maneuver the screen wakes up and changes it's orientation. After this happens a couple times, the map disappears and can not be shown again until I completely restart OsmAnd (including the navigation service).

Hit the same bug today on OsmAnd 2.1.1.
Rotate the screen and the app crashes.

Definitely I have the base world map installed, plus local regional maps, and 10 GB of Bing Earth sat images.

Yes, I also ran into the same issue: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/ohZPN5JImqE

My answer about the world map was to lincarluc's question because he didn have a worldmapand my answer was directed to him.
