Hi all,

I downloaded OsmAnd from the play store in search for an alternative to Google Maps navigation.

I would like to set it up for online navgation, as I don't need the maps on my phone. How do I go about this? I've been trying to get it to work for a couple of hours now, but everytime I want to search for an address it keeps saying I have to download regions...

Osmand has two features to do map display and navigation:

via offline data, so map graphic and routing is derived from a quite big data file

and

via online services by downloading map graphics as tiles , and directions via yournavigation.org or similar.

So you have to choose these two features in Osmand app settings to use online sources.

Maybe you even have to go to plugin-maganer and activate the feature to display online map tile graphics.

Success?

Hi,

I've activated the online maps plugin. In the menu Online maps, I also enabled "Online and tile maps" and "Use Internet".

Are there more settings I need to adjust? I am still getting the error-message "No offline data for regions found on SD card. Download regions from the internet." when I try to search for an address...

Hi Roi!

You are dreaming of map tiles (bit maps) containing address data?

Regards
Manfred

I'm used tot google maps, so I haven't thought of that. Wat do I have to set to get addresses in it?

Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions, but I'm completely new tot this app...

OsmAnd is mainly popular for being able to use data from openstreetmap offline (in its own format called OBF). If you download map data from Settings -> Data Management then you can view map as well as use navigation without connecting to internet. Note that even though the map data is generated every 2 weeks the number of downloads from within app are limited in free version.

If you insist on using online services then.
1. Go to Settings -> Plugin Manager and enable Online Maps
2. Go to Map screen, click on the menu button in bottom left corner, click define view -> map source -> mapnik (instead of offline vector maps)
3. Go to Settings -> Navigation and select navigation service as 'YOURS'.

Hope this helps.

Hi Onkar,

Thanks for the pointers! I set all these in my app, but I think I am stil missing something...

It still gives me the error:

No offline data for regions found on SD card. Download regions from the internet.

It looks like I still need some sort of database with the addresses for the netherlands in it.

There is also an online search option, it's called Nominatum. When you are in the dialog "Search adress" click the most right under button ">" (it shows "internet" if you long-press on it). Then you can enter any search name, places,  streets.

Yes, it is very well hidden. One of Osmands little secrets.

If you switch to Mapnik tiles (point 2 in my reply) then you should not see this error.

Onkar: I've set that option to Mapnik, but I still get the error...

Perhaps it is wise to make this option a little more visible to new users.

I understand that the most popular feature is the offline maps, but I think a lot of google maps users are now looking for a replacement of that functionality since it doesn't work very well an longer after the latest update. I think the demand for online navigation will go up because of that.

Just my thoughts on this...

It seems that the app on my phone kind of randomly switches between "Address search" (offline) and "Online search using OSM Nominatum" (online). I do see the ">" button but it does not change the search window from offline to online right away. It seems that I have to completely leave the search menu in order to activate the switch between the online and offline functionality.
On my Android 4.3 tablet, I do not see the ">" button at all. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
