Real Time Traffic in Osmand

Hi,

The support for Real-Time Traffic is getting more and more important in recent years. It makes navigation application usable daily when traveling to known locations. Osmand at the moment is missing this crucial feature. Could you shed some light on this topic?

 

1.       Are there any third party plugins that add Real-Time Traffic to OsmAnd?

2.       Are you working on adding Real-Time Traffic for OsmAnd?

3.       Do you consider adding Real-Time Traffic support to OsmAnd in the future?

I think there was a tentative partnership with OpenTraffic (http://opentraffic.io/), but it did not produce anything. I can't remember the reasons, though.

Official french highways traffic info is available here :

Access requires subscribtion ; re-use is allowed with conditions (notabily data attribution to "Bison Futé").

Not the same, definitely not real time,
but BRouter uses interesting experimental idea
for traffic static estimation, preprocessed in its rd5 files.

It is based on total length of highway=residental
within some distance from the road of interest.

It uses pseudotag estimated_traffic_class=1..7,
differentiated by multiples of 2 of the above total length.

It is then used for the traffic aware road bike routing profile
for extra penalization of mainroad network with estimated significant
traffic.

the info deployment is AFAIK currently applied
only for several grid files of Western Europe,
like Germany or Czech Republic ( like E15 N45 )

in many countries free traffic alerts are transmitted RDF coded through
FM radio.
It seems like getting at the RDF code in Android is a major pain although
not impossible (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531600)

Dang, sad to see so many years go by with no proposed alternative. I badly want to switch fully to Osmand but the lack of live traffic and user reports is pretty critical to me.

Google unfortunately has a leg-up here with their massive data surveillance... if only we had stronger open-source competition in this space.

Not sure if this is what you're meaning but my understanding of RDS traffic announcement is basically a flag for when a radio station is reading a traffic report so the radio can switch to that station temporarily.

Oh yes, there's also Traffic Message Channel [1] although it seems that's often commercial/encrypted.
