GPX logs from Osaman are toxic to Garmin Mapsource

I have used Garmin Mapsource for many years and still use it to process tracks and waypoints to update the map in JOSM. I have read the two topics about gpx and gdb file problems and followed the instructions with GPSBabel to convert the track logs to gdb format. So far, so good.

MS will open the gdb files without problem and I edit away. When I attempt to save as gpx MS fails with an access violation and my work is lost. I've used many different sources of gpx files, but I have never had this before. Can the programmers please re-visit this? I know MS is old and has never been terribly stable, but it takes gpx files from any other source I have tried.

(I cannot use Basecamp instead)

Thanks,
Peter.

I think you are wrong in this forum, because there is a problem at Mapsource. Report it to Garmin.
The interpretation of Garmin of xml standard (gpx files are xml) is wellknown as very terrible.

Then I'm screwed, as Garmin don't support Mapsource any more and I haven't found an alternative.

Any .gpx file should be viewable and editable in a half-decent text
editor, so you do have the option of looking at what's in the one that
works and what's in the one that doesn't.  Once you've figured out the
matching chevrons the files are almost human readable.

I've certainly hit this sort of issue with .gpx files that I have been
creating programatically in the past.  Also I've had issue with
MapSource and non-US characters - it might be worth looking at the data
contents at the file it doesn't like too.

Best Regards,
Andy

Thanks for all your helpful pointers. For now I'm going through GPSBabel both ways. I'll take another look at these gpx editors, but I have looked in the past and none will show Garmin maps, so I can't see what I'm doing. OSM map as background would probably work, too, as that's where the data is going anyway.

Regards,
Peter.

The OSM link suggested by Metaluc says there's a JOSM plug-in for editing GPXs. I haven't tried it, but I wonder if it would be useful, given that JOSM is where you wind up.

Now that is an interesting find. I will try it out. Thanks very much.

Peter.

I mostly use RouteConverter (https://www.routeconverter.com/home/en) for everything related to routes, gpx files, and also preparation before JOSM.
