Its been a while since I have used Osmand, and several changes have occurred.  Some things are better, but it seems like the UI is more complicated.  Case in point - this seemingly inability to turn off Auto Centering.  I have looked in all the settings and it just not obvious, or it can not be done.  If the later is the case, this is inexcusable.  It make it almost impossible to set up a route far away from one's current location.

There needs to be a button on the main screen to toggle Auto-Centering off, and back on.  Or better yet, have no auto-centering!  But have a "center" button on the main screen, like Google Maps!  Then if I wish to go somewhere in the world on the map, I can work at that new location for as long as I want.  When I am done and want to return to my location,I can press the "Center" button.  I would much rather have full control then someone (designer) trying to figure out how to auto control what I am doing.  Grrr.

Have I missed something?

As far as I know, the app only auto-centers when you're following a route.  To turn that off: menu/Navigation settings/Auto-center map view/never.

Bart, thanks for the hint.  Actually it does auto -center even before following a route -as in planning a route.  I had seen that setting you described, but the way my screen displays, the 'never' option was hidden.  Crap.  scrolled up and saw it.  Ok, that helps!  Yes, that is exactly the behavior I want.  IMHO, that should be the default behavior...

Thanks again!
Doug

I agree. "Never" seems more intuitive.

While I can see this app is powerful, crammed full of bells and whistles, many of which have names which are not at all intuitive, my attempted use of it for bicycling purposes has produced many emotionally adverse moments.  :(  I'm now using v, 4.1.11, and for the life of me I cannot find the setting to turn auto center on or off.  The instructions here appear to be for an older version.  I often need to move the screen away from where I am at the moment, and the fact that it keeps moving back to where the GPS says I am drives me up the wall.  Help?

Beyond that, I thought I had found the way to have a button onscreen to toggle auto center on and off, so that I don't have to remember how to find it any more, but apparently I failed.  I don't know what the button is doing now.  (Note to Osmand: I truly hate icons.  In the app, they are rarely self-explanatory.  If I can create a toggle button, how about letting me control what appears?  "AC" would be a much better label for me than anything else.)

If anyone knows if there is a proper way to create an onscreen toggle button to switch the auto center feature on and off, would you please post it?  Thanks.

Try enabling the quick action button: Configure screen/Quick action.
Add an action (the + sign at the top of the screen)
At the bottom of the resulting menu, "Change--Display position always in center".

I haven't tried this, but the menu indicates this should toggle your preference between centering and not.

Hi all,

I imagine that Change--Display position always in center does a different thing than
Settings->(select profile)->Navigation settings->Map during navigation->Auto-center map view
Auto-center map view lets you choose the amount of time before the map resets to show your position.
Display position always in center switches the position between center and edges.

I suppose the OP wants to switch the amount of time for auto-center between never and something like 15s?

Seems this is not possible directly with a quick action, a workaround could be to switch between differently configured profiles

Yep, already tried, as indicated, doesn't appear to work.  Map keeps re-centering on current location, whether I want it to or not.  Also a little odd that Osmand would use the term "autocenter" in some places, but then "Display position always in center" elsewhere, which serves only to confuse the user.  Well, at least this one.

What about Pere's suggested approach: Settings->(select profile)->Navigation settings->Map during navigation->Auto-center map view ?  Because the setting is specific to a navigation profile,  it should be set on the profile you're navigating with.

Hi,
i want to present my results about the auto center for the map. The programmers of osmand they have done an excellent job, there is no issue at all.
1.
There is no "auto center map" if we don't have active route.
2.
I made a simple test of a pedestrian route with my active position and a destination place after 2km. I have set auto center map at 10seconts. I move the map and wait. After 10 sec the map return at my place. After this, i end  the route and set "never" for auto map center. I set once again the same final destination, move the map and wait for over 1 minute. The map stay away from my location - never auto center.

settings
- auto center map view : never
- auto zoom map : no auto zoom
- snap to road : off
- map orientation treshold : 0

- display possition always in center : off

I hope this answer helps you
