For a given point on the map (path/road), how can I find out its road category, that is, whether it is a paved street/footpath/rough path/cycle lane/bridleway/etc, in terms of the corresponding OSM key descriptions, namely surface and tracktype. Right now the only way I know to do this, is through a "query features" for that spot on osm.org, which shows the exact path/road type in terms of all these OSM properties.

However, opening up osm.org is not practical on a phone, and long-tapping on the point of interest in OsmAnd does not display any such property. On the other hand, comparing the line type you see on the map to the MapLegend in the Help is not convenient: too many taps back and forth, and even then, the different path categories are hard to distinguish for people who are colour-blind.

MOre generally, how can the QueryFeatures option (available when right-clicking a point in OSM desktop) be accessed in OsmAnd, to retrieve detailed information about surrounding POIs, roads etc?

You may try BRouter.de/BRouter-web/ with routing profile trekking (bike) or hiking-beta (foot) .

After interactive route creation along OSM highways of interest, you can review routing related way tags in the table, eventually even export them into CSV file.

Thanks for your suggestion! I already know how to find out route type on a desktop computer (e.g. via 'query features', as I mentioned). My question was how I can find this out in OsmAnd, for a given point on the map.

This can be done on a phone as well, as the BRouter web is phone friendly.

Take it then as an alternative.

Brouter is indeed powerful. STill, it would be nice to know how one can do a good-old "Query Features" for a given point on the map in OsmAnd, even if it means taking the coordinates to a different android app. OSM.org web in Android doesn't seem to support search.

Hi,

probably not exactly what you're asking but, in OsmAnd, under Configure map > Details, you can activate "Show road surface" and "Show road quality". If available in OSM, they will be rendered with a different style (here you can find all the different rendering styles: https://osmand.net/help-online/map-legend/)

Thanks Ale! What would be really useful is to see all these categories as text, for a given road/path, as opposed to colour-coded. That is, for the legend to be 'translated'. However, enabling those two layers just shows me more colours, which for me is not helpful :)

Also, any idea as how to how I can achieve in OsmAnd the QueryFeatures function that you get in standard OSM, whereby you can see not just the road type at the current point, but also nearby POIs, rivers, enclosing regions (county level), etc?
