Welcome to the club:

Apparently this is a case of the developers thinking they know better than the users.

Just swipe it away from list of running apps.

The swipe only works dependind on the Android version, 4.2 or later.

It also works on 4.1 (my experience) and should work on 4.0.

Does it actually shut it down or just remove it from the list of running apps?  (Android 5.02)

It does terminate the app. I'm not sure how gentle it is (whether it
kills or only acts the same way as closing a window), but when I check
list of running apps, the swiped away apps are not running anymore.

Of course the app can be restarted or it may have some background
services running (there should be notification for them).

Doesn't work that way with the Motorola Moto G Rev 2. To kill something
you have to go to the page for the app and force it to stop. It should
NOT be this way.

The designers must have a really low opinion of the users. Why else
make so much shit automatically ON that should really be at the
discretion of the user. Who is so stupid that they need to have a lot
of crap running in the background just IN CASE THEY MIGHT NEED IT and
aren't willing to wait a few seconds for it to start?

The only thing I might want instantly on is the camera in order to take
a picture of a cop beating up a little old lady in a wheelchair.

The applications sometimes do not run any more ,
according 3rd party applications
but still on the list.

It is IMHO rather list of recently manually launched applications,
running or not, with option to terminate by swiping out, if running.

And some other applications, running on background, autolaunched,
are not on the list.

Well, this thread went zero to holocaust in surprisingly short time.

Why are users forced to open another app (one that shows running apps) for closing OSMand??
Is that user friendly?

PLEASE BRING EXIT BUTTON BACK. Just a button with an "X".
To press each time you want to finish navigation or map browsing (whether destination has been reached or not).

Thanks guys

If you are, like me, trying to get custom rendering working the way you want, you will have to restart OSMAND everytime you have a new custom_render.xml. So please: BRING BACK THE EXIT BUTTON (or create some decent documentation about the syntax and functions in a custom_render.xml).

MOREOVER, possibly starting with Android 6, it is no longer possible to force a stop from the app page.  Once I start Osmand -- just to look at the map, for instance -- I can't shut it down without turning off the phone and turning it on again -- a 5-minute process.  You should ALWAYS be able to shut down ANY application at will.

The app (any app) should have a clean exit function.  Period.  Users should not have to root around with swiping recent apps, going to the running apps screen to shut them down, or having to resort to a third party "task killer" to shut them down. Put "Exit" in the menu, or just put an 'X' in an intuitive spot.

The usual tired and worn out arguments to the contrary are pendantic not helpful to users.  Get it done.

What he said! And along with that, NOTHING except essential system
stuff autostarts unless you choose to let it.

Right now I'm trying to find a list of RUNNING apps. The APPS button
just shows all/enabled/disabled but nothing about what's running. I
swear there used to be a page that showed what was actually running.

Correction:  Nothing SHOULD start unless you choose to let it.

You can also install All In One Gestures, which will allow you to remap hard & soft keys of your cell: in particular, you can assign to a long-press of Back key the Kill App function, and it will work exactly as it was in JB 4.1.2.

It's free and does not require root on your device; Just be sure you add this app to the Ignore list of automatic clean-up and optimization programs, if you have any, or it will be wiped away after some time.

Yes I know, It's another app wich adds to the (many) others in your device. At least, you'll not be forced to perform an annoying sequence of click/tap/swipe actions... Thank the developers for this :-/

It wouldn't allow long-press of anything, only double-tapping the status
bar, which didn't close anything. Moreover, it slowed the phone down by
a factor of MORE THAN TEN and has been uninstalling for 2 minutes now.

I guess it doesn't like Motorola. Nice try, though!

Section Hard Keys allows to remap phone's buttons.

Tested personally, working on Galaxy S Advance, Note 2, S5 and Wiko Pulp Fab.

Maybe it does not work with all devices in the world, for those were it works it's very useful!

Indeed! If everything was built to the same standards there would be
only one product per category and they would all be WRONG :-)

I found a way to turn off the app without restarting.  It would stay open as notification for directions to my destination, even if closed the "recent apps" tab.

On the notification, hold and then press the "i" (info button).  It allows you to turn off notifications from Osmand.  That shuts it down.  Then you can turn them back on in the same window.

The fact that you have an application not listed in recent apps and it's not toasting any notification (since you prevented it from that) does not necessarily imply that the app has "exited": it (or some part of it) could still run in background.

An "exit" button is meant to do exactly that: to have the application "core" to quit running and all the depending threads to be stopped... no matter if your destination has been reached or not.

Just to put an example: this feature is present in other navigation apps, i.e. Waze. You just hit the "turn off" button and the app is not running anymore (and of course, if you want, you can also remove it from Recent Apps list, but you can be pretty sure it isn't running anymore).
