When I open osmAnd the gps is turned on when I look at the top of the screen. But when I hit the button to the current position it say's "positie nog niet bekend" translate: "Position not yet know" . In google map it is working. That means the android operating system can use gps but the osmand not. I have checked the rights of Osmand and Osmand has the right to use gps. I think it is a bug that the position is not found. Can somebody help me with that?

Thanks in advance,

Jeroen

When you are e.g.in a house or in a tunnel,  GPS signals do not get through.
Even in the open air, such signals sometimes briefly vanish.
However,  after 1 or a few minutes, you'll get the GPS signal back.
Yours.
Bas.

Download the GPS Status & Toolbox app from the Google Playstore. This app officially works in conjunction with Osmand. It will speed up your GPS position by downloading orbital data. Makes a significant difference
Once the app is on your device open Osmand / configure screen and activate GPS info. This will show satellite status in the top right hand corner of the Osmand map. Tap that box and a list will appear. Select GPS Status & Toolbox as default.
Every time you now open Osmand the GPS Status and Toolbox app  will find your position within seconds. Have a good look around the GPS Status app / settings, to fine tune the process. The help section is particularly informative.

Regards.
Gavin

Hey Tnx everybody,

It seemed that gps is working. But the confucing thing is that google maps use also other means to get the location. What is going on is that inside my home gps is not working. In Osmand you can't get a location. Inside google maps gps is also not working, but you can get a location. When you are debugging the problem thats the weard thing. Google hase a lot of methods to get the location. So when you have a location inside google maps it could be a other method to get the location. That's why I had a location inside google maps but not inside osmand. But gps is also wokring in osmand but only when you have gps.

Tnx for al the help,

Goodby

AFAIK, all applications use the same OS level location service, able to use
multiple methods ( GPS, cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth beacons ).

But the used method and accuracy is available to applications and they are
free to throw away locations acquired by methods they do not want or with
too low accuracy.
E.g. GPS loggers often toss aways cellular based locations, as they can
have error of several kilometers.

There is possibility Google maps are satisfied by any location, while
OSMAnd requires GPS location.

Osmand uses GPS which can be very slow. What you want is Assisted gps ( AGPS ) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
For that you need GPS Status Toolbox app as described above..
There are many factors that influence gps performance. Being inside ,tall buildings, some phone cases, position of satellites, to name a few. GPS requires a direct line of sight between the receiver and the satellite
Under configure screen in Osmand activate GPS info. This will show how many satellites are being detected and used. If the number is low or reads 0 then your home is interfering with the gps signals. The GPS Status & Toolbox may help.
Regards.
Gavin.

IMHO, if the Android device is using plain (offline) GPS
( downloading GPS almanach and ephemeris data from satellites )
or AGPS
( downloding the former via internet connection )

is decided on OS level ( if a data connection is available or cached data are not expired ), not on application level.

One need not GPS-Toolbox for the quick AGPS fix.

It only allows an explicit warm or cold data update
based on the data age or manual trigger.
And, it reportedly fixes some eventual problems with GPS.

If GPS works correctly, it is not really needed.

There is a terminology confusion what exactly is meant by  AGPS.
In narrow sense it means the above, determining position purely by GPS system..
in wider sense it is sometimes used for combined location methods like (narrow)AGPS + Wifi + Cellular + Bluetooth (interior BT beacons ))

I think there needs to be a feather in OsmAnd that you can set witch location services you want in OsmAnd.

But there is another weard thing. When you have a location in google maps. Sometimes you see a location in OsmAnd, but the button go to my location is not working. It is possible that OsmAnd is using different location methods. But the button go to my location is only using the gps method. Another weard thing is that sometimes OsmAnd had a location with a blue spot, but sometimes it had not. I think OsmAnd works fine with gps. But when it is using other services it is like it is not design to use other services (and not debugged).

This whole thing can be solved by the feather request that you can manage different location services with OsmAnd. And that alle buttons (like to go to my location button) is also using what is set in OsmAnd.

I'm using OsmAnd alternatively with internal GPS and an external Bluetooth receiver (Garmin GLO)... and it works. OsmAnd usesdata provided by Location services for its, positioning, if your source is internal it should always work, if external, just make sure the "GPS provider" you are using works well (and "mock positioning" option is enabled in your Developer Options menu: there are several i apps in the Store, I've tried some of them and finally went for Bluetooth GPS Provider: it works great!

Can't say I agree. If the orbital data is already on your phone ( typically three days worth ) it does not need to be downloaded from the satellite ( that can be slow ). Therefore your gps must fix quicker. My experience of GPS status / toolbox, time to fix is 2 seconds. Osmand as a standalone is nowhere near that.

But that is, what I have said.

It may be device dependent.

I guess there can be also an effect
GPS status may keep the ephemeris data continuously valid
so any time OSMAnd is launched it need not to download them.

But, I have not noticed with GPS status significantly faster GPS fix
for OSMand on my former phone on Sony Xperia M dual / Android 4.3,
And probably neither on mycurrent Xiaomi MI A1 / Android 8.0.

But I will check, as I do not use OSMand these days much,
preferring LocusMap and Mapsfactor Navigator.
