As we can see, the iOS-version of OSMand has an unique feature directly from beginning with release 1.x: Perspective view. When can we get this in Android? Where are the problems to realize this functionality with a 2.5D (or 3D) view? I think this feature would be a game changer, because it is much more intuitive to navigate with a perspective view instead of a flat top view.

What do you think?

I agree. Nice to have. Most dedicated GPS units have this capability.

Fully support this idea! A perspective view would be great!
Please!

This feature was requested already 5 years ago. Look at this request.

As you can also check here, it has almost 200 supporters and is fully funded now. I hope we will see it soon.

For me Osmand is perfect for mapping and even bike navigation but I can not use it as car navigation because of some problems and missing features:

1) The rendering is slow, so is zooming or map rotation. This makes the navigation problematic, because sometimes you wait for map redrawing and you don't see what to do next. Most today's navigation use OpenGL rendering. Osmand should switch to it.

2) The navigation commands are very often confusing. You don't know what to do unless you look at the map. Also a more iGo style commands like "take the second right", "turn left on next traffic lights" or " turn right at the end" on a T-shaped crossroad, would be a big improvement.

3) The navigation misses many feature like excluding some (paid) roads, correct rerouting (calculate the whole route again if there is enough time to do so, for example on a highway) etc.

4) Average speed on a certain road should taken into account. This information might be collected from Osmand users and stored to OSM data. If would be also differentiated by weekday and time, it would be perfect. For example iGo has this function and because of it is able to suggest much better way then Osmand.

There really is a lot of work to do. But the developers are very good and I hope we'll get there once. :-)

iOS version uses the new Qt/OpenGL core, which supports perspective view.

There is also a Qt test (!) build for Android:
http://download.osmand.net/latest-night-build/OsmAnd-qt-arm-nightly.apk

I tested it several months ago, everything was working on my device (I don't know if it is working today), but perspective view was not supported.
OsmAnd releases for Android currently don't use the Qt core, I can't remember the exact reason (a developer wrote about it somewhere in this group).

Max

I think some minimalistic car-navigation-like 3D view would suit to OSMAnd.

Just the route, route features like curves,
junctions, crossroads, roundabouts, fuel stations ( POI configurable ).

Some HUD big font digital hints or info.
Not distracting, resource saving.

Why cannot application on mighty multicore Android devices have
what humble, limited and small J2ME application has for years..... ?  :-)

I often miss 3D "Eagle" view of J2ME application GPSMid,
size 900 kB , on small 320x480 display on my former gone phone Nokia E52 / Symbian S60v3.
