I've created a gpx file from google maps and was hoping to export it to osmand on my Galaxy Note 4 to use it for cycle navigation.

But all I've managed to do is reach a level of frustration where all I want to do is uninstall osm even though I've paid for it and never use it again.

I've used various sources on the web and finally to the faq on osm

I have a GPX file, how do I get it into OsmAnd?
Android
  • You can download and open it via File Browser or Dropbox and select OsmAnd as a target application
  • You can put it in OsmAnd home folder: osmand/tracks/(optional_sub-folder)/your_file.gpx

 Sounds easy doesn't it.

Well I've searched using ES File Explorer, Asus File Manager and Win10 explorer and I cannot find an Osmand or tracks directory anywhere!!

What I have found is the following empty directories....

(Galaxy Note4)\Phone\Android\obb\net.osmand.plus
 (Galaxy Note4)\Phone\Android\data\net.osmand.plus\files
(Galaxy Note4)\Card\Android\data\net.osmand.plus\files
(Galaxy Note4)\Card\Android\obb\net.osmand.plus

In the OSM app on my phone if I go into general settings ...misc the data storage folder is reported as.... /data/data/net.osmand.plus/no_backup
This folder does not exist!!

So where is Osmand hiding and where do I put my gpx tracks?

This is so frustrating !!!!

The issue that you describe might be due to Android 6.x. See also https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/osmand/DHqtb-NEXbc where I tried to help otapi (without success).
So you can try to move your installed OsmAndto another location the same way as I descrived in those posts.

The simplest way to import a gpx track is as follows.
The first line in the quoted explanation might not be entirely clear. What it means is:
- Copy your gpx track somewhere onto your phone.
- Use a file manager to find it, select it and tap it.
- The file manager will ask which program to use to open it.
-Select OsmAnd to open it.

Moved data to external memory which did the trick and allowed me to find the tracks directory where I can put my gpx files :)

Now my next problem is getting OSM to send notifications to my Pebble smartwatch so when I'm cycling I can be notified of the next turn.

This I can't get working but there was rumour it did. I will have to create a new thread for this.

Thanks for your help

OK, believe it or not, there's an issue with how Osmand creates files/directories. Directories, in particular. If you install/run Osmand and look for the GPX directory, it is impossible to find.  However, if you then do a reboot of your phone, voila - the directory appears and all the online instructions about where it is actually make sense.  For example, I found that ES File Explorer could NOT see the location when I did a clean install.  Reboot - and there's the GPX directory.  Bug in Android or Osmand, dunno -- one of those -- but the fix is, as I said, reboot your phone!
